I got my first 6+ on my 7th entry, and then real close on the 8th ...
But I haven't been in a position to enter anything with a serious intention to compete ... hopefully that will change soon.
I think to get a 6+ you just need a photo that stops the viewers in their tracks. I can't speak of what it takes to get a 7+ as I haven't done that yet. :(

Then explain my 5th entry...
Wait, ya did say relation to challenge... |

It took me 14 challenges to get above a 6 and get a ribbon. I've only had one other above a six. Been all down hill since. Mostly my fault because I'm one of those last minute kind of people.

I didn't get my first 6.0+ until I became a member.

I got above 6.xxx on my fourth challenge with this:
It was, to be honest, more of a right-time-right-place picture. I think the best way to improve your photography (and, likewise, your score) is just to keep trying. Everyone has below 4.5xx photos sometimes. It's all part of the game. |

I passed 6.0 on my 5th challenge
I recieved my all time hi on my 9th challenge
But, I finally figured out how to take photos after 60-65 challenges:)
After reading some good books and taking MANY photos, my last 20 challenges have averaged right around 6.0. I am still hunting a ribbon, but I am consistently better now than I was before. I had no formal training or study before I signed up at this site, just to have a point of reference.

Took me 12 challenges to rack up a 6. I'm all over the map, I frequently get scores in the 4's and fairly frequently get mid-6's. I have two over 7.0, but one was my first challenge with the 20D and the time-date was set wrong, so I lost a ribbon there. My score fluctuations are entirely my own "fault" and I take them in good humor, even if I feel mildly peeved sometimes. I have a bad habit of following my own head wherever it takes me, and that can be strange territory.
This was my first 6, in "Road Signs IV":
