Holy CRAP! I thought the whole site went down! LOL....
Ok, well, I'm happy with 120th place considering over 500 entries. Not bad for a flower "The Naturally Sparkling Amarylis". Incidently, although this was advanced editing, the only thing I did to that photo was one click on edge enhance. The rest is as is other than a crop - which makes 120th place even sweeter to me.
One person remarked on the size of the photo. I think it is a bit dumb, (pardon the expression) if the photo voting was based on size. I tried many times and this site wouldn't accept it as a 640, so I had to fix it about 20 times to get it to accept what it did accept. Then again, no one knows that but me. So please, vote on the PICTURE and not on the size that goes up. There are a LOT of photos that are either long or wrecktangle or not perfect sqares. I don't even pay attention to that when voting. I don't think others should either.
Anyway, thanks for all the lovely comments and again, I'm very happy. Especially when I see that photos I voted high on fell below mine in finals.
I'm ready for Candlelight and Say Cheese now.
Great job everyone!

Image size IS important. ;^) If you submit images that don't meet the maximum 640 pixels on at least one side you probably will take a hit on your score. Give or take 50 pixels...if your image is under 500 pixels on the long side the scoring hit is even more likely.
As for square, rectangular, etc...that generally isn't an issue if it works for the image. The standard aspect ratio's generally are more pleasing to the eye and can impact the viewer subliminally (in a positive way).

You got THAT right. The hell with that! I'm exhausted as it is spending a lot of my day time trying to take that perfect shot. I spent nearly 8 hours on and off just doing my Too Late entry. The cheese was equally exhausting. My back hurts, my leg muscles are pulled, my neck muscles are shot, etc, all from trying to hold the camera in that perfect angle. I am hoping with new equipment I am investing in next year it will end the pain and strain. LOL....
Besides, my Say Cheese entry it da bomb! LOL...I did it all last night, and I'm very pleased with it. Wish I could change one small detail, but it was one of those things where you just couldn't go back for another try. I'm still very pleased with it.

Rose, I don't understand the comment on your shot about size as it is large enough as far as I am concerned. I do, however, disagree with you on the size issue as a whole. There are entries in many of the challenges that are very small (ie 250 x 195) that would be really great shots if they had resized properly. Many of these shots wind up this small because people are trying to keep to the kb size limit and are not resizing properly to maintain the actual dimsnsions of the photo. In these instances, I think it is appropriate to comment on the size and tell the photographer that there are ways to resize the file but keep the dimensions. Images this small are usually lacking in detail and therefore, IMO deserve a lower score. As I said, this was certainly not the case with your shot. I would be curious to see what the actual file size was for you at 640. Maybe that was the problem. The dimensions certainly weren't.

Thanks Jen, and I do agree in the cases you mention. I really don't know about my photo. I think I took it a 2mb or 3mb in the store at Walmart. LOL...(I was actually asked to leave the store with my camera right after I got in that shot). But what I do is just do editing, and then resize. I simply go to the image area for frames and things and hit resize. I set it on pixels and ratio kept, and bring the top number to 640. Now, sometimes the bottom number is higher, which causes problems, so I bring it down lower to the mid 5 hundreds, and this usually brings down the top number as well. If I dont' keep ratio, it distorts the image (as with my avatar image here being distorted). So, I guess I still have to learn to do that properly to make these size adjustments for contests.

What photo editing software do you use?
I primarily use Paint Shop Pro 9. When I save, there is a button titled "Options." This brings up a new screen that has a sliding bar that allows me to adjust the compression of the file. Usually, 10 works for me. I know Photo Shop has something similar. This is how I reduce that actual file size versus the dimensions of my images.

I placed 18th over-all, which is pretty swank in my opinion, I'm quite happy with it, what I don't understand are the people that voted on my picture that gave me these scores below:
score voted: 2 ---> 4 people
score voted: 3 ---> 4 people
score voted: 4 ---> 14 people
Do people just have a serious jealousy problem with people that take better pictures than they do? Are a lot of people experiencing this type of voting on good pictures?
This was my entry btw, just so people know what the hell I am ranting about:)

I have PSP8. When I go to save normally, by going to file and doing a "save as", I "usually" get an automatic drop list that goes straight to JPG unless I want to change that. If I want, I can go to File, then export/import, and save it as a tube or even a JPG or GIF that way, but don't usually bother. So I just usually let it do its automatic thing and save it as a jpg. I really have no idea how to work the "compression" saving of a photo to be honest with you. I just do it all by eye. If I think it looks distorted or less sharp, I back out and start over, or sometimes resize it "FIRST" and then do Post Processing.
I am probably going around my ass to get to my elbow in doing that, but my motto is "if it works, don't fix it"..LOL..so that is how I normally do it.

I didn't change my vote based on the size of your photo. I tend to mention size when I comment because a number of new people don't realize how big it can be or know how to properly resize their photo (as, I'm guessing, was your case since you couldn't upload at 640). Sometimes I link to this tutorial on using Photoshop to prepare for challenges. I'm sorry if you feel this is dumb but a number of people have been quite thankful so I probably won't stop doing it. |

18th place is fantastic!!!
By the way, I am one of your "4" voters. Sorry to say. But personally I just don't like photos with people in them unless it is a portrait challenge. I find it gives away anonymity IF it is your spouse, offspring, etc, because others "may" know you or them on here or have seen you use them before, and I feel it can influence voters. I'm sorry. I know that is a whole other thread of debate, but that is how I feel about it. I am also not partial to nudes or where political or social views come into play in the contest. However, I also understand that "art" has many forms and "artists" have many styles. Just as a voter, I vote my own personal preference as do others.
I also got 3's on my photo and don't understand why at ALL, but that is neither here nor there. Others vote on what they like, and maybe at one time they had a bad experience with an Amarylis flower! LOL...Who knows.
Also, I know free study offers up the opportunity to do portrait shots, as any photo you like can be submitted, but I just tend to not be partial towards people in photos. So I start at a 5 automatically, and if I like the subject matter it goes up from there including technical aspects. If I dont like the subject matter then it goes down by one point and I move on to the next entry. Unless it is extremely boring and distasteful or truly technically bad, then I move it down to the 1's and 2's, in which I usually give comment to those.

I understand what you are saying totally. However, I really don't think that it took away from my particular photo. Although it may not have been a perfect 640, the photo was still well shown, and all details could be made out, etc. The size, in my case, really didn't take away from the photo. However, when there are instances where it does, then I agree with you.

Nude?! You can't see anything from the very top of her chest up, this is no different than wearing a halter top, for all the voter knows she is wearing a strapless bikini. Whatever, to each their own I guess.

No, no, no. I was being generic with that comment in my liks and dislikes in ALL submissions. Not yours. Yours was not a nude.

nephoto, you also have to remember that the majority of the voters here at DPC vote low IMO. While there is a full scale of 1-10, everyone has their own theory on how it is to be used. There are some who only give out 1 ten, etc. Five may be the middle (average) point for me, but not necessarily for them. I personally gave your shot an 8. I thought it was tastefully done and had an artistic flare. The same cannot be said for all nude or partially nude shots that are entered here. While the majority are artistic, quality shots, there are some that are entered just because the photographer wanted to play the nudie card that day. As with the murder/suicide themed photos, I think the voters just get tired of seeing the same old (sometimes controversial) thing.

Ok, my bad, I can accept that some styles of photos don't turn peoples crank, and with your method of scoring I understand the 4, I just wonder where the 2's came from :)

Well, my shot came in toward the bottom of the barrel. One comment made me laugh, regarding the use of flash washing out the natural shadows.
a) when you leave the natural shadows you are told you should use a fill-in flash.
b) when you are shooting in extremely low-light there are very few shadows to leave anyways
*shrug*
But hey, I had essentially "one weekend" of shooting to draw from for the whole month thanks to Canon. But now I got my camera back. Alas, the snow & freezing has now begun.
