I have the opportunity to show two of my photos in an association photo exhibition.
I can take the easy way out, and pick two that I know many people like (and which have the most favorites in my portfolio):
Or one of these, which scored well for me and people have said they liked:
Or I can be adventurous, and display two of my abstract/painterly photos:
Or maybe one from each group (though that seems discordant). I'd appreciate any advice, opinions, and suggestions. (If I missed including something that would be worth considering in my portfolio, I'm open to consider it. It's not a closed list, but I only have until tomorrow to decide since I have to print and frame very quickly.)
Thanks in advance!
Neil

One useful thing I have learned from showing is that keeping the images on a related theme is always good if you can do it. With just two images, I don't think it would make a lot of difference, but you may want to consider it.

Neil, I would go with 'Good Morning Macro' and 'Geometry in Steel.'
Both are excellent images, yet they are very different. Together they show a nice range of diversity, and I believe they are the strongest images you have shown. |

My vote for Autumn Tapestry & Sunset Bow, just think they both have that "Extra"..
Depending on the photo exhibition & what type of people that will visit, they might not appreciate-understand your abstracts as much, although they are awesome as well.

I like Sunset Bow and Good Morning Macro. I like the Geometry in Steel also, but I think I'd have to see how it prints up and frames before deciding on it. There's a lot of dark to it that might be a bit overwhelming when displayed.

2 for Autumn Tapestry
1 for Soft Radiance, 1 possible implied, "abstracts"

when you have such a diverse range of offerings, it makes for a really tough decision--especially when what you show may be your 'first impression' to many people. you have to ask yourself, how do you want to be known? do you want to be thought of as 'just-another-photographer-who-can-take-a-pretty-picture-in-focus' or do you want to create the impression of 'whoa-that-is-different-and-cool'?
also, a lot of it depends on your audience. do you expect it to be more of a crowd looking for razor sharp landscapes, or esoteric beauty? will it be a local audience of people who already know you, or a regional audience where you are a relative unknown--or will it be somewhere in between?
to further complicate your decision, consider who else will be showing and what they will be showing. will you be the only photographer, will it be only photographers, or will it be a lot of everything? how do you want to fit into the mix?
lastly, consider what you expect from the showing. do you want to sell what you show? do you want it to lead to commissioned work? do you want it to help towards name recognition?
again, neil, with as much talent as you have, and such a wide-ranging portfolio, this could be a difficult choice. on the other hand, if you are comfortable with your abilities and have an idea as to what you would like to come from such a showing, this could be just as easy as picking an entry for a challenge: go with what you would love to see. just say, "if my house was burning and i could only save two prints, which would they be?"
now, if i was you, with your portfolio, and my house was on fire, i'd probably try to save
and
good luck, and have fun! |

i think your triangle entry and the macro entry...they are complete opposites of each other and show your diversity

Thanks for all your comments and insight. This is tough for me!
5 for Sunset Bow
5 for Soft Radiance, +2 possible implied, "abstracts" (incl my vote))
5 for Geometry in Steel
4 for Autumn Tapestry
3 for Good Morning Macro
2 for Van Gogh Sky,+2 possible implied, "abstracts" (incl my vote)
1 for Pink Aura, +2 possible implied, "abstracts"
1 for Take me Out to the Bow Wow Game
Very quick addition, may not be correct, but I think so.
Skip raises a really good point, and it's really in tune with my thinking. Plus I didn't mention it, but this show is a part of a meeting of an association of mental health professionals. So maybe the abstracts will be more interesting?
I am going to try prints of all the above in the prescribed size. The prints can only be 8x10 because they are being transported to the show in someone else's suitcase). It's a pretty small print size; Not much for a first "show", but hey, it's a start. ;)

you'll want something that will really stand out, something that people haven't seen before and will give it deeper attention...geometry in steel.

blow the doors offa the joint, neil! abstracts all the way!!! your stuff is so interesting that anyone mildly interested in photographic arts will want to see your other stuff. just make sure your bio includes an easy url to find you.

8x10s only look small in your hands. matted and/or framed, they look fine. have a ball! |

Autumn Tapestry and Tulip
If it is related to Mental Health then one of the abstract ones would be good. (Tulip)
I love the Sunset Bow, and you take wonderful photos. Keep 'em coming!
