Humor doesn't do well most anywhere, but it should.
To paraphrase PJ O'Rourke "Anybody can get a rise out of a room by saying 'I have cancer' but try doing five minutes of stand-up comedy."

Too bad they don't show the highest and lowest scores somewhere just so you can see where you stand as of...

I thought it was boring waiting for someone to come by and sign an autograph. That is why I took pictures. :) But my sister just HAD to get autographs. The player pictured is Steve Findley who plays for the California Angels, but I share your feelings for Boston!

Hmm - I started out in the low 5s, but now the high 4s:

My first entry (and a 2 week old camera), so I was not expecting the Earth. Guessing from last week's scores, this result will put me squarely in the middle of the rankings. At least it is not at the end!
Admittedly, I did my scores for everyone else and had to revise quite a few upwards when I found that on first impression I gave nothing higher than a single 8. I have now given a couple of 9s and five 8s. Lots and lots of 5s, though (a category into which my pic obviously falls...)! |

Sorry, I had to. Most people do this at one time or another. "Try not to bore your audience, but depict boredom in your photo" they said. I think I didn't/did, but it's only me apparently...

I topped out at 5.6 about two hours ago and am now at 5.3 with a single comment.
I actually expected to do much, much, much worse than this. When I put a lot into a challenge, it fails - when I rush, I do ok. Next time, I'm just gonna press the shutter randomly and then submit whatever I get - thinking about my submission apparently hurts my chances.

My rendition. Good Luck - I know I need it.

I was very disappointed at my scores, but I feel a little better that I am not the only one. This is my second contest and I did so much better in the Best Friends one. |

this has to be the worst challenge that i have seen since i have been here. it appears that no one really tried on this challenge. they all look like snapshots or last minute ideas. and i can't blame them with a subject like "bored." i was starting to really get depressed about the choices they have been making for the challenges lately. but after seeing the "free study VIII" i think it will finally give me a chance to do something i want.
now all we need is a "no editing rules" challenge and i will be a happy camper.

Bumping up my request earlier on this thread here with another question. If taken perfectly(which I know this photo wasn't)or with a similar type of model/subject would this approach to the challenge have faired better than what we've seen???? I ask because I don't want to scare myself away from entering challenges for fear of getting reamed. My judgement is a bit off at this point.
Please, please comment!
This was a hold back I took, that didn't make it because I thought it might not be sharp enough for the crowd, for starters. I was out passively looking for street type people who had some character to liven up things a bit and this was the best of the day. Looked all over my neighborhood for this one nut who wears lots of silver, bandanas, beaten leather, Allman Brothers moustache, dark aviator glasses and carries around a cheap guitar with a mini amp. Normally an eyesore but I was dying to see him over these last three days.
I am still curious how you think this photo might have rated had I entered. I don't want to be too trepidatious about what I do or don't enter.

To conquer boredom, I explored some - and found life waiting there.
With my camera in hand and my route poorly planned, I set off - though I knew not to where.
Lead by my feet, my eyes left to meet all the sights which surrounds me,
I passed trees and water, a man and his daughter, but nothing could astound me.
Then up ahead like a bright flash of red, a visage that spoke so explicit.
I opened my lens so I could show my friends the image as only I saw it.
I stayed for an hour, my eyes they devoured the beauty I happened to cross
Then I set off again, thinking Oh what a sin, if I'd stayed home, oh what a loss.
So now I know better, that when boredom does fetter a change of scenery cures me.
With my camera beside, and my eyes open wide, life will be waiting there for me.

Then, obviously, you're bored and we all did an excellent job! :-)
(Remember, please, it's not like we all got together and said, "Hey, let's all submit the same thing!" See last year's (wagon) wheel challenge for comparison.) |

This is the type of image that I most value - a picture that is spontaneous, as oposed to all the staged ones I've already seen in this challenge. I also think you chose well your subject: "the street type people with character". So, in what concerns the concept, I really like your photo. However, I feel it is too dark and needs a little sharpening. I think the composition could be improved too(though I really couldnt say how... perhaps showing a little more of the surrounding).
So, I guess I'd give it a 7. |

I like the spontaneous photos just as much as everyone else but you have to remember not everyone has the time to just go out, walk around town and look for the that perfect shot. By the time I get home from work its dark. I am not trying to make any kind of excuse. I'm just trying to say sometimes you have to work with what you got...

Sadly my street guy was sitting in front of a huge, dark, plate glass window and the side of a grey cement building with very little charm( which might actually have worked well in some eyes.
Outside of the "sharpening filter" selection in PS, which stinks up my shots after the first "bling" I don't know how do do a good job of sharpening.
I get the feeling I should be glad that I didn't enter that shot as I already kinda know where it fell short. So throwing it in the mix, may have just as well been and exercise in pain.
The posed shots aren't cutting it for me either BTW.
C'est la vida loca!!!
Good luck everyone. |

I nearly fell asleep voting on this challenge. I did not give anything a score higher than 8 and only a few at that. I usually give out at least three 10's and some 9's. I mostly rated 4 and below and I did not comment because it would have taken me all week to give opinions.
