Funny. I saw it right away.
But. Now about me,me,me
Here's a colorized version of one of my outtakes. The originals are pretty much straight b/w even if they were taken in color. I added grain because it is a classic treatment for paper shots. I was influenced by Barry Whitehall's ribbon and paper pictures. Mine aren't as eyepopping as his and I did give it my own spin, I think.

Some cameras (including mine) don't have a B&W mode. All digicams shoot in color anyway. It's just a matter of whether the B&W conversion in handled in the camera or in software.

Submission was "as composed in camera" (uncropped from original frame) but converted to B&W:

This one was made for B&W! I think it's much better than the color version, don't you. Of course, it didn't show that in it's 126 place finish, but that's par for the course for me. ;)

Here's my also-uncropped second alternate (let me know what ya think):

I think i like the B&W better

It never ceases to amaze me how removing the color can add so much to an image. I've seen and taken many in color that I thought were great but when converted became amazing. Good job to all who submitted.

Cropped a little tighter as suggested in some of the comments. Thank you for the comments

I think I like the B&W better.

Converted to B&W using channel mixer:
red +10
green +80
blue +10
contrast -4

brightness-contrast adjustment layer: contast +10; brightness +10

reduced size, unsharp mask 80-1-4

I really wanted to submit one of my b&w cat -- but I chickened out because of all the cat haters. I know there are flower haters, too, especfially when they're macros, but I thought it stood a better chance. Hey, BradP liked it -- who cares what anybody else thinks :)

Really, every single comment was valued. I've gotten where I look at the number of comments before I look at the score when I update. I have learned so much from those who have taken the time to comment. :D

I used the channel mixer on 100% blue to convert to b/w, and I went with the really tight crop to emphasize the hair plug holes.

Here's my original

And my entry

Can't quite remember what I did, converted to grayscale, levels, curves, saturation and contrast, I think. Oh, I added grain, I think it really brought out the details of the walls

Here are mine:
B&W

Original

The original has had no editing except for resizing for DPC.
No cropping was necessary for this shot.
Not much difference - except for his eyes and the background.

Same camera, similar shot! Scary!

(edited to say mine looks nearly identical in color)

No crop, although I probably should have trimmed the left side of the frame a bit.
Used levels to darken the background and highlight the sun filtering through the grass.
Basic channel mixer conversion to monochrome.
Resized.
Unsharp Mask.

This is the crop that I had originally wanted to submit but I figured I would get nailed big-time for the blown-out sky. I ended up submitting a square crop and got nailed for the foreground, not that I was surprised by that. What do you think?

I never took a color photo of my entry:

I was testing the 20D B&W feature, so I was just experimenting.

Here is a similar shot in color:

I would have preferred color on mine:

Your B & W was one of my 9's and after looking at the color version, I have to say the B&W is my favorite.
There is a "softer & nicer" feel to the B & W. Maybe due to color actually being a distraction in a way, and in your B & W, my eyes seem to be naturally drawn to hers, without distraction.

Great portrait!
