Give people an incentive to vote, comment, and/or enter in challenges.
The fix:
People are already enamored with little gifs, give them out for participation like voting and commenting.
Another potential fix:
Increase membership to $50/year. There was 184 challenges in 2011. Every challenge you vote on 100% of the entries, take $0.05 off next year's membership. Every challenge you enter, take $0.05 off next year's membership. Comment 100% in a challenge, take $0.05 off next year's membership.
The monetary aspect could be anything. I just pulled this out of my ass in ten seconds.

Only thing I can think of that would kinda make me mad is if people just post their votes as a comment to say that they commented on the image... If that makes sense... |

Slow down Mr. Venser...
I thought Ann had a point. So I will emend my support for increasing the size, to support for just increasing the horizontal size to achieve the full acreage.
Money incentives for voting/commenting leave me feeling a little dirty.
The best idea, for me, is to increase the number of basic and minimal editing challenges. I wonder what the demographic (don't tell my mother I used this word) might be for people who might enjoy dpc, but who are discouraged/turned off by one thing or another. It could be that a lot of people have gone to tablets, phones and flicker type devices/venues and these are not that interested in our petty perfections (not mine) and old people wisdom (like mine). Yes, it is possible that another language is being spoke. |

So many people have made so many good suggestions throughout the years - some would take a bit of work, others not so much..
However I have found a new way to enjoy DPC with my daughter and it has nothing to do with Photography,
We call it "How many today Cory??"
The way this works is as follows - I open a Chrome window - and before going to DPC my daughter and I make a guess on how many posts Cory has his name against on the front page under "Recent Forum Activity" - then we goto DPC and count them, I think the record was 9 at any one time. Abigail currently leads me, but regardless we have great fun AND we don't have to pay memebership.
PS, I guessed 3 this time, Abigail 2, neither of us were right on this occasion. Old Cory likes to throw us a curveball from time to time! It was a rare zero this go around. Its works best in the morning due to time differences.

I don't think any of that makes any difference...... Give out the admin passwords to the site council maybe so they can move things or arrange to have people who know do stuff (I assume they are equally limited by lack of access as the rest of us). Double edge sword but at least if it's broken as a result, it's from trying something rather then this stasis. |

Probably the funniest thing I've read in a long time here. Because oddly enough, I've tried to guess how many he has posted in the rant threads since the last time I logged on a few times. Lol. Normally I am WAY short... ;) |

It probably doesn't matter. We all need to get past the upcoming catastrophic events of November 28, 2012 before we can return to worrying about petty things. Open your eyes and you will see. |

Zero Cory recent posts? Am I the only one that thinks maybe we should send someone to check on Cory? |

Yes, I come here to be insulted. |
Not my fault if you're a masochist.
Back to the discussion at hand. Staying put because some members couldn't be bothered to scroll to see an image is exactly why we're still stuck at 800px. It's absurd and you're solution is to do nothing.
edit - Does that mean we should cater to members who are still browsing the net with their VGA monitors? |
Okay, whatever. I think our posting guidelines say something about not being an ass, but I'll let that drop.
My point, and I do have a point...is that my laptop, while it isn't the whippy spiffiest thing out there, is only a year old, and 1366x768 is still pretty common even with current model laptops. I'm pretty sure that even people who want to produce bigger, badder, bolder images, don't want their viewers to have to scroll, or even worse, scale the image and ruin all that careful sharpening. If you go to pretty much any high quality professional photographer's website, they manage to create portfolios of effective images that work on a small screen. Part of the "challenge" here is creating effective images for the web. Setting realistic limits on image size gives people, who may not know what the current state of the art in screen sizes is, guidelines to work with. I'm pretty sure that if I, as you suggest, voted a 1 on every image that I had to scroll on, the vote scrubber would clean me out pretty quickly, so that isn't a useful solution.
That said, I'm all for increasing width limits. |

According to the first page of Google results, it's a lunar eclipse and Justin Bieber has a concert at Madison Square Garden.

If you want to stop people from voting, allowing bigger images is a good way to do it. |
I think Ann has a good point - the pixels available are changing as the different display sizes change (and with the introduction of phones, tablets, etc.) Her laptop is only a year old (newer than my pcs), but it has gone to the 16:9 ratio, and thus is shorter than 800 pixels. Modern browsers should be capable of auto-size, allowing the whole image to appear on the screen. "But then we're losing additional resolution!" Yeah. Get over it. If your image can't sustain its votes without those extra 32 pixels... |

It's irrelevant what's common in the world... it's only reloevant for the common users here.... A simple script put on the site for a week or two would give what sizes that are been used by actual users.... Would be simple enough to get the stats on the challenge submit screen, voting screen and some others to break out the various blocks of people.... Collect some facts... Publish the results to be transparent and then make an informed decision (and no I don't count a simple poll taken a while ago). Stats would include the size of the viewport and screen because they are not the same... in my case the browser viewport is a small portion of the screen.

Originally posted by Ann: I'm pretty sure that even people who want to produce bigger, badder, bolder images, don't want their viewers to have to scroll, or even worse, scale the image and ruin all that careful sharpening. | I'm sure they don't either, but they have no clue, and neither does the site, as to what I'm going to be browsing the site with a priori. People vote on their cell phones. I'm sure there are members who really do still use SVGA monitors. The point being we can't presume to know, and we shouldn't hold back because others don't want to move forward.

I've tried a couple other voting systems, they all pass the scrubber. Before anyone bitches, make sure you understand the definitions of fair and consistent and how it would apply to a particular challenge and voting.

I think everyone is going about this the wrong way. We all know that this thread is going to end with us arguing amongst ourselves and Langdon doing nothing. (looks like we already have a good start with the arguing) The question we need to ask ourselves is what can we do to improve this site ourselves? If we all committed to do a couple things to improve this site I bet it wouldn't be long until it was thriving again. I have to admit I am guilty of not giving back to a site that has given me so much. I don't vote very often, I don't comment very often, and I haven't entered a challenge at all this month. I think if we all commit to voting in at least one challenge a week, and commenting on at least 5 images in each challenge we vote on then we would see things pick up considerably. I'm sure some of you are already doing that and maybe even voting and commenting in every challenge (I know I used to). So think of what else you can do, could you complain less in scores threads? Or better yet ignore the score threads entirely. Could you turn of your voter tracking stats? I still look at my score but I don't track each score and it makes a huge difference. Another thing that could really help is by mentoring or finding someone to mentor you. Personally I love it when I get a unexpected request for help by someone in my PM box. I know it's been done before but why not put together a list of people who want help and those willing to give help. (in fact I think I will do that right now give me a minute and I will set it up). I know this is the way I have gotten to know many people on this site. WPL is great but in the mean time lets get together and help each other out. |

love it though, really I do.
I'm at home for the week, so that means I've actually been going to bed at a reasonable time (having the girlfriend about helps me to get to bed earlier ;) )..

I agree with everything else you wrote except I have a question pertaining to this statement. Why should we as paying members gives two shits if the site's owner doesn't?
I know the answer, but it's a point of contention which rears it's hydra'esque heads all too often. |

This has been brought up many times before -- and it's up to the user to decide what to do. I'd still like the option.
I would probably stick to 800 pixels in the vertical, because I think people wouldn't bother to scroll to see my image, but I'd certainly use 1200 or so in the horizontal direction.
But I would love to have the choice.

Answer: Stop being so damn negative. We're all astute enough to realize DPC isn't going to change. Truth is it doesn't need to, but the attitude around here sure does.
Edit: I hope it's obvious that wasn't directed at you, Jennifer.

I'm thinking and hoping (mostly for your own sake) that your last statement in this post is a lie. In any case; this post says a lot more about you than Cory. |
