But the longer things go on without this "needed change", the longer and louder the gripe. They don't necessarily do anything to rectify the issue, and they don't remember that some improvements, albeit small, have been made in the neighborhood.

So really......the question is.......what can you do, that you have control over, to make your neighborhood more enjoyable? Block party? Neighborhood cleanup? Help a neighbor who can use it?

Or......remember why you came to the neighborhood in the first place and be thankful.

Standing around grumbling about something you did for/to yourself a couple of years ago out loud is kind of silly, don't you think?

I see people here regularly getting way more from the site than what the paltry $25 fee entitles you to receive. You find friends, mentors, deals on equipment, advice on personal problems, coupons for special offers, and great leads for many things not even related to photography.

So you get a pissy comment once in a while.......so someone starts a fight in Rant.....big, fat, hairy deal.

Look what you can do to get more out of the experience that you've paid for.......if it's not worth it to you, vote with your dollar, but don't expect the site to change just to suit YOU!

YOU know who you are......

Actually, as time goes by, gardens and lawns need tending. Eaves need painting. New numbers need to be painted on the curb. Asphalt needs repaving. It's not enough to sit back and do nothing. There is work that needs to be done.

:-)

If you have ever rented a property you will have had good and bad landlords.
The good landlords fix things when you call.
The bad leave it so long that you move out.

Which one is Langdon?.... We all know !

Problem:
Update the site news on the left hand side. The stories it references are 11 months old and giving suggestions on get satisfaction does nothing.

Fix:
Update shit.

Actually it is quite a good analogy in my case. I live on the hills in the outskirts of Melbourne, Australia. 3 years ago 142 people died in my area in Black Saturday fires, 42 within my neighborhood. Partially the high toll was caused by the bad management by the council - the roadsides were overgrown, the National Park had no burns for many years, public reserves were full of fuel - all perfectly ready for the right weather of Black Saturday with extreme dryness, highest ever temperature recorded in Melbourne of 46C and winds of over 120km/h (sorry, I am in metric). My neighborhood had been fighting the council since the fires in 2003 burnt 90% of the Alpine National Park (area equivalent to Denmark and the Netherlands together). We did not squabble amongst ourselves, we organized a Community Fireguard, cleaned up some roadsides but the council would not do their share. We fought and fought and nothing was done. 42 of our neighbors had to die before the coumncil changed their ways. We now have proper fire plans developed, burns and clearing done. I hope it will save lives in future.

So I hope that Langdon does something before the casualty rate on this site is too great for him to pay the bills for hosting and whatever else he spends our money on.

I think you two are exaggerating just a bit. The lawn does get cut regularly. Have we ever gone a week without any challenges? The site works just as well as it did 10 years ago. The only exception I can think of is the menu system which doesnt work on some mobile devices. Langdon should try to fix that but other than that everything works as new. Now granted, we could use some new features if we want to attract more people and make the challenges more challenging again but that's very different than a place falling apart.

Jeb had it right.

I have been here for two years. I have only seen the change to the updater after the rush of activity with Get Satisfaction. What else has been improved and added?

From the site FAQ:
"Why should I become a site member?
Becoming a site member helps support DPChallenge, enabling us to continue to develop and expand the site. We offer our site members a number of exclusive features, and we're constantly working to expand that list."

So what exclusive features were added to the members only list in the last two years?

I think that we could ask for Expert Editing to be done once a month , similar to a Free Study. Nothing against the people that produce simply stunning images in Expect, but it gets boring after a while seeing the same names, winning over and over again, people have, to be honest, just given up entering as it is the same results time and time again.

I am saying this as it is a photography site, NOT a digital manipulation site. So once a month would be just perfect in my eyes.

((( You all can bring on the hate to me now LOLOL_))))

Good idea. Let's get rid off Expert Editing and the best photographers this site still has ;)
What about banning some other frequent ribbon winners as well? Ribbons for all!! :)))

I agree with the once a month thing. If you ran it like the FS (ie a month long) then maybe the substance might improve a little and who knows maybe even a few more flavors of eye candy to choose from.

Remind me exactly, why, you felt it necessary to be so rude in answering a perfectly valid opinion?

The answer that, you ,gave is one of the reasons that other people get turned off and why the drama happens on here.

Next time, answer with a positive approach or not at all.

Forget about answering that, I just realized who you where.

So welcome back MargaretN

If the expert challenge was only once a month and gave ppl (me) time to try and develop the skills I would be all for it. I don't mind seeing the same ppl win as I so enjoy looking at their amazing creations and reading their notes when they are so kind to leave them but leveling the playing field by making them monthly would make it easier to submit.

And yeah, it's the rudeness in the forums that make me steer clear of commenting here except during DPL & WPL. Something about team spirit that just makes ppl nicer .. or maybe makes me nicer.

I think a once a month Expert Free Study would be very good, not only would you have a month to set up, shoot edit etc, but it would also give anyone that is not an expert time to look up ideas and concepts and read tutorials and practice on their skills.

The people that are experts in picture manipulation are truly awe inspiring and I know it wants myself to better myself, but I think having a month to think of an idea, a concept, shoot and then edit will beneficent everyone that is trying to push themselves.

So what if the same people keep on winning, we all realize they are in a realm that is beyond most of us, they understand and have learnt hwo to do what they do and they do it so amazingly well,,,,BUT with time and lots of practice in a month, we can learn so much more,

So that is my stand on the Expert Challenges.

BTW - I am the one who organized the Community Fireguard for our neighborhood. My work was met with gratitude and respect from the neighbors. There is also now much more active cooperation from the council due to these efforts.

I wish the attitude of the DPC members changed from praising the status quo and pleading with Langdon to forming an active group and actually making the difference.

Hmm I think that is what we are trying to do here MNet, but nonsense and rude reply's will drag this thread down to you level.

So lets get back to the original topic at hand and conduct ourselves with honour and helpful advice , so non negative , rude one up-showmanship should not be in this thread. We are ALL trying to help and offer advice here with respect for each of our reply's, so let's honour the people that started this thread and those that answered with dignified responses,

Lets see. How long has it been since Langdon responded to anyone?
Don't look for ANY changes to be made. He was a youngster when he started developing the code and has made a bunch of changes along the way. Since then he has married and has a family. How many members have you known of that split with their mates because they spent too much time messing with this crap? Langdon started this so he and a few of his friends could improve their photography skills. You will notice he has very few entries. Cut the man some slack, enjoy what he has given you for a paltry $25 a year, or free if you like advertisements.

once he takes money he is open criticism and I'd argue he hasn't "given" anything. the community is what makes this place great.

The only thing that needs changing around here is to give me ultimate power over the Site Council. Then there would be some excitement, and probably a rush of new paying memberships. Oh yeah!

Yeah you are right, some nearly mythical character who never makes an appearance and who can barely handle picking challenges contributes more to this place than we do.

Please.
