No offense, Doc, because maybe you know Steve, but this seems like a low blow. His front page is full of sixes, so his thumbs haven't exactly been up his ass. Carry on with your masters suggestion. |

This to me truly does smack of elitism, as it suggests that not only am I a poor photographer, but that I am unable to recognize a good image when I see one. Best I no longer frequent any art museums and other similar venues, as I am seemingly too naive to appreciate anything contained therein.

Well you have basically just descibed the format of the Oscars,Tony's,Grammy's etc. and people eat that stuff up... |

I don't know Steve as in we talk a lot, but I know what he likes photography wise and I think I'm pretty apt to think he doesn't find ribbons to be a large reward for him. I'm not saying he's a suck photographer, I'm saying he doesn't value the ribbons. We call those people "DPC Underground" and I'm sure he's a proud card-carrying member.
EDIT: ACTUALLY, I might be confusing SteveJ with someone else. Is there a photojournalism Steve? :)

Run the Masters' opposite a Commenters' challenge, where entrant must have given more comments than they've received. We did it once before, anyone know what challenge it was? Elite yammerers, do any of you remember? |

This twist might add some interesting incentives and table turning. Some members would carefully consider the importance of trying for first, and may instead enter that POS artyfoto they never considered entering, while others, (myself included) would aim for a high score, hoping to get 4th place.
Let's play for the virtual pink slip.

OK, it's killing me. Who am I thinking of that likes B&W PJ style shots and I think he has a triptych of three girls wearing school uniforms staring down into a puddle? I swear his name is Steve. |

True enough but I am not a paying member of any of those groups. The last movie I saw in a theater was Capricorn One, I have no idea what a Tony is, and really don't care for the Grammys's... and while lots of people eat that stuff up... I don't. Therein lies the difference.

I am not certain about the specifics, but I do believe it was sometimes after the NYC GTG, ...sad thing, I really like him.

He just outgrew DPC, is the way he puts it. You can find his stuff on 1x.com — Steve Hill is his name. He's on facebook too.

Steve still reads the threads, he offered me some fabulous advice about 2-3 weeks ago.
He is a fun guy, I must remember to tell you about the story with gin and tonic , a one dollar tip and the maitre'd chasing after us from Central Park Lakehouse |

Darn. You anticipated me.
Sidenote: I really thought the Nixter challenge elicited some wonderful entries. I don't think I could stand any more great photos for awhile. |

I've been keeping my eye on this thread, I can see both positions but I'm very much in favour of a Masters' Free Study.
The last one occurred pretty much straight after I joined DPC - not being able to participate was a factor in me trying to 'up my game', I began to try to shoot for ribbons, it affected how I approached photography. To an extent I'm all better now! I've changed as a photographer and as a viewer - I favour the more eclectic image. I still turn out souless work from time to time, like my last Free Study image - if I haven't managed to shoot something I really believe in, I'll default to something that ticks some other boxes.
So, why would I still support a Masters' Free Study? For me it would be a (justifiable) opportunity to try harder - by that I mean pull the stops out in a way that I wouldn't for a regular Free Study - make a special trip, spend an inordinate amount of time (or money), build a set etc. That sort of approach to an image just isn't feasible month in, month out but once every couple of years is a different matter.
Given that a Masters' Free Study might cause people to make a special effort (Would Jorge have made the effort for Descent from the cross for a regular Free Study?), what would motivate them to compete? A Masters' Free Study with a restricted cohort based on (DPC) merit creates that incentive. Plenty of people have won ribbons, very few have won Masters' FS ribbons. So it isn't really about being elitist, it's simply about using the right carrot to make people to make a very special effort or to give very special consideration to their choice.
Now, I'm aware that if there is such a thing as a DPC cliche image, then a Masters' FS might produce a set of uber-cliches - possibly. Does it matter? Not really. As for me, if I qualified, I would think about what would appeal, but more so I would think about my own work, look at what I was good at and what I liked to shoot the most and then make every effort to hone and refine that sort of image. Would I make a greater effort - yes. Would it be a 'better' offering? I would hope so.
I'd like to say that's my 2 cents, but it's probably about 7. |
