When I click on the thumbnail for a ribbon winning photo, it would be great to see the photo "as submitted" and to be able to click a button to see the original (possibly resized to protect dial-up users). Since one goal of the site is to learn, seeing the original and the post-processed version together would be an opportunity to learn how to better crop, orient, and adjust a photo for maximum appeal.

To get things rolling, here is a recent photo as submitted (left) and the (resized) original (right).

Maybe some ribbon winners will show some side-by-sides of their ribbon winning entries so we could get an idea if it's worth doing.

Now that is a good idea.

It's not a ribbon-winner, but it is my top-scoring photo, from the
Without the Hand of Man
challenge.
Entry: Original:

I think this is a good idea in general ... what I did was post a link to the original directly in the comment thread on the photo, so anyone looking at the photo page has a link to the original right there.

Hey, that's a good idea, too!

I agree, I love to see people's originals. Being on SC, I get to see the originals of the top 5 placers and sometimes it's amazing to see how much they have been improved with just a simple crop. I'm not sure I see this as being implemented into the site but it'd be great if people would link to an original in their photo description.

Considering that the top 5 have to submit original files for validation, perhaps this feature could be automatized?
10/04/2004 02:21:39 PM · #10
I think it would be an ok idea if the photographer wanted his original to be viewable. It should be the choice of the photographer.

thats a good idea alright, though i can see the other side of it as well. those not necessarily wishing to reveal the original - considering the the entered photo is the finished work.

kind of like submitting negatives to a camera club contest i guess.

I think it should be voluntary ... I certainly have some photos I'd rather not show in their entirety.

Putting it in the photo's discussion thread also allows people to post it from any hosting site (e.g. mine is linked from pBase) and not use up their DPC Portfolio space -- the original shouldn't need its own discussion thread.

Then they can just post the thumb of the entry to this thread.

i agree strongly with that. it should be entirely up to teh photographer. after all, its his art.

That would be really neat! I would love to see this feature...

Maybe change things so that when the submission is uploaded, the original goes with it. This would be optional, of course...there could be situations where someone would not want the original made public. For example, there may be non-model-released people in the original photo that have been cropped out for the submission.

Then when the challenge is over, make the originals available for people to see. Eventually (hopefully), it would become the norm for people to submit the originals with their challenge entries.

It would also speed up validation if necessary...

I'd agree that this would be a good addition to the learning aspect of the site. I'd gladly have my original files displayed for informative purposes. It would also encourage me to write more detailed descriptions of my in-camera and post-processing techniques.
On the flip side, I would love to see others impart their techniques and post-processing steps .

For this one, I not only already had the original posted, but shots showing application the Curves I used to achieve the effect. Links in the photo's thread.

This method of communication also should encourage the leaving of specific comments. Thanks for publicizing this idea!

I too think this would be a great idea. However, I think instead of the original, they should post the-original-converted-to-jpeg. After all, how many really want to sit thru downloading a 30+MB RAW file or whatever...

I looked through your post at the time you originally posted. If more people would do as you have done, the learning content would go up. Congratulations for that and for reminding us.

Still, not everyone has the time, and if not ... simply seeing the two would help.

Also agree it should be a JPEG file, RAW files need not apply.

Original: Ribbon:

PS post-processing steps:

1-Rotated (original was rotated for display too) and duplicated for an adjustment layer.

2-Cloned out red laser light beams used by guide to point out rock formations during the 15 second exposure.

3-Hue/saturation layer used to oversaturated all colors by 24%.

4-50% greyscale layer used for highlighting - Light, darken, and color burn applied for subtle highlighting changes. This is like dodge and burn in film based photography.

5-Neatimage applied for noise reduction.

6-Cropped and resized to meet DPC requirments.

7-USM applied... Amount: 100%, Radius: 0.3, Threshhold: 0

Great idea, here's my contribution:

The original file won't be here long, space is way too precious in my portfolio. The original has just been resized, no other modifications.

I'd like to add that I'd be willing to do this with my other ribbon winners if room was made for a 640pixel version of the original outside of my 10Mb portfolio space.
10/04/2004 03:50:30 PM · #22
i second that - being a challenge entry it should be that way if it is implemented,

10/04/2004 04:04:56 PM · #23
I like the idea as I'm here to learn. This is not a ribbon winner (can't seem to find any in my portfolio) but my best point score so far:

This could also cause problems. I remember when Heida posted the original of 'Angel' in the forum and the difference was so vast that we had an argument about digital art for days and days. We have tutorials for learning, and I'm sure if there is anything in any image that you would like to know how it was done, lenses used etc that PM'ing the photographer would likely get your answer. Sometimes seeing the original causes the finished product to lose some of the impact.

This is absolutely true. To me, however, this is a learning forum so the payoff is worth it.

It would really further distinguish this as a community in which to learn the art of photography rather than simply display it.
