Man I feel a little bad looking at you guy's average scores given. I seem to always end up around a 5 average. I almost always cast votes between 2 and 9 for each challenge. I try to be consistent in my evaluation of technical quality, content, and how it speaks to the challenge theme. Hope it's well taken.

It just all depends on your starting point. I figure a 5 is what the average uncle joe takes at thanksgiving. So thus my average is higher, because most of the photos are better than uncle joe̢۪s. But I also give very few 8s, 9s and 10s, because we̢۪ve all seen spectacular things on here, and it̢۪s rare that things are spectacular. So my range is actually pretty narrow.

+1
I did vote with full scale when I started in 2010 but in the last few years with so few of us left and those still around mostly experienced photogs, I vote on the scale 5 to 10.

i must agree that what wowed me back in the day might not wow me now .
and like you guys i'm a between 5 and 10 voter .
i reckon just for entering you deserve 5 .. then if its halfway good .. a 6 ..
between 7 and 10 ..
7 - pretty cool .. got some good qualities
8 - awesome .. really spoke to me .. got heaps going for it ..
9 - incredible .. should be printed .. up there as something extremely special ..
10 - stopped me in my tracks .. this is an image i wont forget .. that literally hit on a deep level ..
8, 9 and 10 i wish i could have taken a photo like that myself .. in awe .. and there are still heaps of them in the challenges .. :)

edit to say ..
i dont vote a pic down because i've seen similar subjects before ... i vote each challenge as a standalone .. and how it satisfies the challenge and how it speaks to me ..
i feel thats in the spirit of our voting 'requirements' .. :)

was quite surprised by how many awesome images there were in this challenge .. handed out quite a few 9's ..
ppl are so inventive and imaginative in these challenges ..
feel i should defend my high average score .. if there more entries i'm sure it would have been lower . !! .. ;)

That's what I do. Make sure to use the whole scale every challenge.

I tend to use 4-8 with 9 being a top 3 for me in a field that was above average and a 10 hoping to see that one blue ribbon in a grouping that I think is full of really good to great images. I don̢۪t hand out many 10̢۪s. If the challenge has low participation I won̢۪t likely issue a 10. For me a 4 is a reach at fitting the topic (I have one that I entered that fits this category in voting now and it absolutely is getting this level LOL)

Regarding the various comments here about the voting "scale". It's still the same as it has been.

Under Voting Rules

You Must
"rate entries on a scale of 1 to 10. A score of 1 is a "bad" photo, and a score of 10 is a "good" photo"

Through observations of thread conversations over the last couple of years I have noticed a trend where people are afraid to vote less than a 5 for fear of upsetting someone. Additionally I suspect that many here want to maintain a certain level of average vote given to stand on. I've also seen (in comments given) where a voter "skips" an image because they didn't want to give it a score under 5. That defeats the purpose of voting. I think we have a fair number of voters that vote pretty much 5,6,7 and rarely anything else.

Nearly every challenge has a range of photos in it. Some really awesome, and yes, some, well not so awesome. Participation points shouldn't be a thing ("well, they entered, they should get at least a 5 for trying"); this isn't Facebook. The voting scale is there for a reason!

The bottom line is, however you vote, just vote consistently. Personally, I'd much rather see a full range of votes given that just 5,6,7.
