I think it is important to remember that the current regular entrants are mainly seasoned DPCers, not beginners. Using 5 as the lowest vote acknowledges this fact because most of the current entrants can produce photos that are at least just a bit shy of the average score of 5.5.

Can you clarify this please? Are you saying that most current entries are producing a score that are just under 5.5, or are you saying that most people entering photos are capable of entering a photo that's worth at least slightly less that 5.5?

I largely concur with this view, though "average" isn't quite how I look at it -- if it's in reasonable focus, not unintentionally over- or under-exposed, exhibits some evidence of deliberate composition, and can somehow be related to the topic, it's hard for me to justify scoring it on the "bad" side of the dividing line ...

Of course. I hope you get the larger problem sorted out soon. ... I'll pick this up later.

Did a little poking around the DPChallenge Archives History. Grabbed the top 20 and bottom 20 for the ranges of highest score, lowest score, and median score for all challenge history.

Highest scores have come down, Lowest scores have come up, and the Median scores have risen ... definitely a shift to a more compressed scoring range.

So what? Are you going to change our voting habits? The remaining DPCers are mostly nice people and don't like trolling ;)

That's what I do. Make sure to use the whole scale every challenge.

While I feel that each voter must do what they do, could you explain to me, how you "regularly" score 2s? I am merely curious, what you "look at" in an image. I am not asking you "to justify", and I don't want you to feel "bad" - I am asking so I can "learn" something.

Somewhere in the thread it was posted from our rules, that the scale is 1-10 with 1 being a "bad" picture and 10 being a "good" picture. So "2" is pretty bad. While there certainly are "bad image" occasionally, I don't see them "regularly". So, I would be interested to hear what your criteria for voting are.

And further as an aside ... "10" is a "good" image ..."Good" is not "Excellent", is not "Outstanding" :-). Quite funny actually, I think each challenge produces many "good" images, so according to DPC voting rules, we should see many "10" in each challenge :-)

Hi Margaret. No, I could never change you, nor need to, you're perfect in every way already. :-D

While I can understand that some voters are fearful of lowering their voting average and always vote 5 or greater; using the full scale is something that I would encourage. There's a reason for the 1-10 scale and those that use it should not be peer pressured into thinking they're doing something bad or wrong; they're actually using the voting system as it was built and intended.

BTW, for whoever the remaining DPCers are - casting a vote below 5 is not trolling. :-P

I'm pretty sure that some people (perhaps even subconsciously) use the scale to rank the pictures from best-to-worst, so a vote of 2 might just mean "least favorite" and not innately a "bad" photo ...

times have changed ..
because there are so few ppl entering the challenges compared to back in the day .. when it wasnt unusual to have over 300 entries in a challenge and over 200 votes .. then the voting system as intended would have been a lot fairer .

now with so few ppl entering .. every vote has a much greater impact ..

but i dont give a vote less than 5 because i'm aware that it has such an impact .. and just for entering i feel you deserve a 5 ..

and then there's the situation where i've voted and see how the photos are placed after rollover .
and something that didnt make a huge impact and that i may have given a 6 .. when seen thru the eyes of the other voters .. i may see in another and more positive light ..
so i like to give benefit of the doubt ..

i dont know what the answer is ..
but i'll be interested to hear other views .. :)

feel almost embarrassed to be such a high voter . !! ..
but in challenges where there are so few entries the high votes make a huge difference to the overall average ..
also there were some wonderful images in all the three challenges i voted on ..

btw .. i'm always blown away by how different ppl interpret the challenges and the imagination that goes into their entries ..
i want some of that imagination .. !! .. :)

I was REALLY impressed with the quality of some of these images, especially for minimal editing. There are a couple I seriously gasped at coming straight from camera. My hat is off to these talented folks who have some MAD technical (and artistic) skills. Well done!!

What great entries in this challenge! I almost never vote this high overall, but the votes fell where the votes fell. Awesome job with these long exposures, folks!
