One problem with that is, if folks knew ahead of time which challenges would run when then the temptation to reset the camera's time/date stamp might prove irresistible to some individuals, and it would be a nightmare to police. Also, there's a qualitative difference between having a week (or two) to conceptualize and execute and having an indefinite amount of time to plan and conceptualize, even if execution occurs within the window of the challenge. |
Sure. That makes sense. My "details" side, wonders if that's really a problem... or one we're just paranoid about. But that's an anectodal question more than one to answer.

Um....
But the price is the SAME....why should it be lowered?
And there have been changes made over the years, a fact that an awful lot of people overlook, and to be quite honest, it seems an awful lot to me that people bitch about the lack of change because DPC doesn't meet THEIR expectations as far as scope and/or quantity. You're basically saying you won't return unless things update and change. Yet the membership fee did not increase with any of the changes.
Nobody made any promises or commitments to do so, and anyone who looks at this site and the community know it's a fine deal for the $25 a year. Not to mention all the people such as myself whose lives have changed immeasurably in multiple positive ways because of the site and will point out that there is not much out there that can change your life for $25 a year.
I know after going on twelve years I still derive great pleasure from this site......and that's coming off a pair of *seriously* meh 5.3xxx entries!

Hear, Hear!!!
But looking around, it seems the numbers 'seem' to have gone up greatly. Would be interesting to see the final tally on how many people have rejoined with this.

As I have always said, The DPL is what separates us from ALL the other sites and should be a major focus on keeping this site up and running. |

But can it be used to encourage new members given that the sign-up system seems to be working to keep existing teams and exclude newcomers? |

My team is almost all newcomers. Are you looking for a team to play with? Except for one longtime member who added himself to the pool late (so I got him :) ) and me, we are a total unknown :) I am looking for a 7th member . . .
ETA BLB is team name; no logo yet.

Originally posted by SaraR: With just 45 entries over the three challenges currently at the voting stage, I do wonder if DPC is entering its death throes. I lost heart a little when entries started dipping below 100, and then resigned myself as they settled around 50, but in all honesty if the average dips below that, I personally will find shooting for challenges all a bit meaningless. I do have to own that I don't have an entry in at the moment - neighbours wasn't an option for me, Rockwell really didn't appeal, and extended editing isn't really my thing (i.e. I'm useless with photoshop), and so you could argue I am part of the problem...
So, what can we do to drive up entries amongst those of us who have stuck with DPC? I think it would be interesting to analyse the numbers of entries to the different types of challenges. Do technical/compositional challenges get more entries than quirky/niche ones? It seems to me that challenges can be split broadly into technical, compositional, open themed and accessible(such as colours, numbers, flora, animals), close themed and/or less accessible, abstract (in thought not artistic), niche, and one-off responses to news events or community events? Are challenges being selected to cater for maximum participation, or are there too many that fall in the niche/inaccessible category? Just thinking aloud - I don't have any answers, and before any one points it out, with just 279 entries in 9+ years, I acknowledge I am inconsistent (at best ) in entering. |
I am clearly late to the party (shocker), but I can say I love dpc. I came here over 10 years ago to learn, which if you look over my years of participation, I have. I can say without a doubt though, I learned through the commentators. I re-upped after years of absence from a post I saw from melethia. I was disheartened to see such few votes, but mostly the lack of comments. I'm not disillusioned. I need to improve, and I've relied on my friends here: bassbone colorcarnival Alicia bamartin and so many others. $25 is a years worth of enjoyment. This is a hobby and I can NOT get out of any store directed towards hobbies with spending less than that in one time. I will put my money where my mouth is and (a) re-up once again because I believe in this site (b) make more comments (c) try to enter again. |

I have to say, that this argument has been flogged to death at least 3 times a year since I joined. And it always ends the same way.
But adding to that, I did leave, came back, rinse and repeat several times.
I honesty think, that a mobile app would work well for this site and boost numbers a lot.
The reason I say this, i just go a mobile phone (yeah die hard land line for me) and I did go to the DPC site to vote, when I was sitting around doing nothing. I am sure i am not the only person that does this either.
But it is horrible, it is so tiny you canna see anything, don't even bother trying to get on a thread or your profile if you have fat fingers, you have to enlarge it so big, you lose the end of it and then lose the thread or score or whatever when it goes back to normal size.
Everyone is now on phones, more so than the laptops. If I am on a train or subway, theoretically I would go on FB or the News, cus I can read it, I know for sure that I would go to a website tht held pretty pictures and I could ask and answer questions or vote on pictures, rather than read the worlds worst news.
I really think that, an app is needed. You would be pulling in so many more people. Who are bored, sitting on a train, laying in bed, sitting in a taxi. The future seems to be not camera's, it is phones. At this point it seems that cameras are a step above a mixed 80's love song cassette. But we are dealing with, I dunno actually what we are on now, past CD's, Past Bu rays, are we into the iTUnes, YouTube, I dunno, but do you see where I am going???
Someone else had a good point. Do challenges for people that are just starting out, do a challenge for people under the score of 5.5. (that seems middle range score) and then after that challenge, get some experienced people (a panel) to give critique. I know we have a critique club, but it is a thought.
Have a phone challenge, have a phone set up, have a phone "how do they do that" Have a phone anything' at this point. Cus, everyone has to admit, as much as they hate it, the phone and the camera's in them, take sharp, clear, colour clear shots better than cameras half the time. And I HATE it.
We have spent thousands on our cameras and lens. but there is no denying it. I am pretty sure Ansel would be shocked at our camera's compared to his, just as we are at the phone qualities these days.
I think, if you do not want to see it dying out after the DPL, then serious consideration should be one to for apps and mobile phones.
That and a stupid Like Button and NikonJeb rocks, don't mess with old school, he is kinda awesome for an old fart, who made it from there, to where he is now, he rocks, have respect!!!! =P

I just read this thread from start to finish.... I am one of those people who have been around here off and on for almost 15 years. I was a member for much of that time but not always active. I would pop on and look around regularly and kept my toe in the water.
I want to commend the folks that have been keeping this site up and running for so long. It is a terrific source of information and opportunity if people choose to use it. I've never done that well in challenges...no ribbons or front page images, but I have grown considerably in my photography skills by being associated with this site. Winning would be fun, but the challenge of capturing an image on a specific topic and entering it in a contest is really much more valuable than winning a virtual ribbon.
Immersing myself in photos by voting and learning what I like and don't like about images, offering constructive criticism and receiving it honed my photographer's eye. Learning to conceive and execute an image in a one week timeline taught me how to be efficient and still stretch to new areas of photography or editing skills. This is my second DPL and it brought me back to the site because of the great learning opportunity I experienced with the League in 2015.
I would be very sad to see this site closed down. I don't think there is anything close anywhere on the internet and the community of people here is an amazing group of folks who have nothing besides their love of photography to bind them together.... So kudos to the "old guard" and keeping a valued resource available. Lets hope that the new DPL will help retain some of those members who have drifted away... |
