I don't think you need to put too big of a "fence" to deter some of these thieves

e.g. //photobucket.com/images/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited/

When you upload a picture and claim it as your own and you're too stupid/lazy to even bother removing the "Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited" from the filename?

Here are more photos "lifted" from DP Challenge.

How about letting the photographer place a watermark on his challenge image after the voting is over. You could even place a time limit for doing so, after that, too late, no watermark.

Is it possible to make the watermark appear everywhere else except here? When us members view it we see a normal image but when viewed from somewhere else, you see the watermark.

No.

I was "for" watermarks before, but I am even more so now after finding a Challenge entry
that took me the better part of a day to chase down in a National Park preserve being used
for a hunting advertisement. Oh, yes. And credited to some other person.

Not very smooth.

The transparent overlay is good. Can the viewing of the Page Source be prohibited?
11/30/2009 01:09:50 PM · #182
I can see why it's there, to stop peopel stealing the images, however I have often copied images, for ideas and to learn from. Would be better if we could download just a low res iamge. Big enough to look at but not to be useful for anything commercial. The standard of photos here is just amazing.

You could maybe just ask for the image too. Probably what people should have been doing all along. I think in the majority of cases people wouldn't have a problem with it.

The page source has nothing to do with it. All someone has to do is hit "print screen" on their keyboard while they have PS open and then past it into a new PS document. Takes two seconds.

The overlay is a good start and will help for sure to keep the casual image stealer from doing so. However the ones that are more likely to steal the image and re-use it for their own gain are the ones that are more likely to take the time to steal it despite the overlay. So, it is a great start, but we also need the watermark. (after voting of course, and as an opt-in so each photographer can decide if they want their images watermarked)

Was the overlay removed? None of the top 3 on the front page have it and I haven't adblocked the transparent gif. I wouldn't mind allowing those who wish to opt in for a watermark to have the choice as long as it was something small like an artists signature. If every image on the site started having a huge "property of" across the entire image though I'd quickly lose interest. A large part of the draw to this site for me is being able to look at all the wonderful pictures people have taken.

Quick google search, if this site started looking like this I for one would stop coming.

All images on the front page, including the top three, have the pix.gif overlay.

It would be a good idea to have a dual upload, the challenge image and an image with a selfchosen watermark or copyright notice. One is visable during challenges the other directly after it.
For Portfolio stuff you can already do it yourself.

It is easy and should please everyone as they can choose if they want it or not and they have the freedom to do it however they seem fit for a particular image.

You're not supposed to see it. That's the point: it's invisible. Think of it as a sheet of glass over the entries... a casual thief attempting to drag or right click the image is actually selecting the transparent layer instead.

ahh!! awesome!!

I like it...can I get one for my images which don't get posted here but do on other sites? I am serious!!

Thanks!
12/02/2009 01:45:38 PM · #191
There's nothing to get. It's just a 1-pixel GIF saved at 0% opacity and stretched to fill the area on a layer over the image. Any web designer should be able to handle that.

still confused here..
took dswann's image cathedral right off the pae and into my desktop...and it looks great!
what am I missing here??
12/02/2009 09:29:22 PM · #193
nice! I just tried again on another image and it worked great!
stops rats in their tracks!!

Apart from entering challenges I also use DPChallenge as my image library and I want to be able to drag my images to my desktop for when i want to upload one or more to another site or to send to friends or family. If there is a watermark on my images or a blank overlay I won't be able to use my own images anymore. That is a big negative to me.
Unless it's done in such a way that my own images are not affected when I want to use them myself.

As noted numerous times, there's no overlay on your own images.

Thank you-I am not worried about folks getting my photos, but there are a lot of photos on this site that these photographers have worked hard to produce.

From my programmer perspective I think that the transparent overlay is just giving a false sense of security to the users that are really concerned about the security of their photos. I don't think that the "big" rippers use click and save or print screen to get a picture. It only takes 15 minutes to write a program that downloads ALL the pictures from this site, overlayed or not.
I think that watermarking is the best measure against image theft, though I admit it would completely destroy the "magic" of a photo.
Maybe a compromise solution would be best. Did the tech-staff considered loading the the images via a flash container? That would solve right-click+save and stop normal crawler ripping. It would take at least one hour for someone to write a program that bypass this :))
Now really, you can't really stop someone if is really decided. There are even applications that reconstructs an watermarked image. We live in a world full of bad people and we must live with it.

I'm still bummed about the right click to zoom in firefox. Is there anyway around this? I don't want to steal anyone's stuff, I just like to get in closer sometimes, see the detail... also, the overlays gallery should definitely be omitted.
12/07/2009 03:19:39 PM · #199
Did they remove the transparent overlay? I was just able to copy a picture that's in the voting process..

Clear overlays are security theater. Nothing stops a determined image copier. Not even the absence of an actual image file...

You simply can't stop it! Know your enemies:

" + " on Windows
" + + 4" on OS X

If you don't want your image copied off the internet, don't put it on the internet!
