Earlier this year, my daughters and I lost their father to a shockingly unexpected accident. Knowing the holidays were going to be tough for us I decided to do everything non-traditional this year to make it easier for them. Today we got a new Wii and a bunch of games so we can play all weekend, and tomorrow we plan to indulge ourselves with a total "junk day". We plan to eat corn dogs, doughnuts, cheese, chocolate and lots and lots of other things that we never get to eat (we're into healthy foods all year long). I figure we'll just make the day all about things we love - without doing the things that make us miss what we don't have.
Anyone else going non-traditional this year? Would love to hear your stories.

We started a tradition last year of traveling somewhere new for the Thanksgiving holiday. Not to visit extended family, but to get away as our own family unit.
We are in Sedona AZ this year enjoying the unbelievable scenery. Last year we went to San Antonio, not too far from home but still away.
We get to do all sorts of things together as a family that we wouldn't be able to do at home with work, friends, etc.
I hope we get to keep this up.
I hope you and your daughters have fun with the donuts!!

Get yourself a nice supply of Pepto Bismal and Alka-Seltzer, and other assorted help-aids. That stuff is going to havoc you :D
On a lighter note, have fun eating it anyway!
Also, enjoy the Wii, I HIGHLY recommend you pick up New Super Mario Bros. Wii. 4-player simultaneous 2D platforming extravaganza |

My wife and daughter went to Houston for a family thing that's well.......just screwed up from my point of view. So.....since I *have* to work Friday and Saturday a half day, they went without me.
I plan on going to a sushi bar for eats, and I have a particular spot I want to take my camera that'll waste most of the day.

My parents and I live about 6 hours apart, and we're separated by the Cascade Mountain Range. We've officially decided this year that in the future we're going to start celebrating Canada's Thanksgiving, which is in October. This does two things; makes traveling much easier/safer, and since my boyfriend is Canadian it makes him feel more like he's at home.
We missed it this year and just celebrated it last weekend. My parents came down and we had tamales, rice, and beans for Thanksgiving dinner. Yummay! |

I haven't had a traditional Thanks Giving in 12 years. No turkey, no family (Well, my wife....but then she hasn't EVER celebrated Thanks Giving). In Japan I miss the feeling of Christmas and holidays. However, this year I started to feel a bit more 'Christmasy'...Japan is slowly making things more like back home with decorations etc.
As for the junk food...as K10Guy said, get the stomach aids ready for day 2...but enjoy it.

This will be my first Thanksgiving in New Zealand and because it is a US only holiday we are taking a little bit different approach to it. My wife is Chinese so we are going to be eating more of an asian based Thanksgiving Dinner with her family, We will have some of the Traditionals but the majority of the meal will be a bit different then what we would have if we were still at home. We will be celebrating on a Friday, Not Thursday, I will be watching football at 6:30AM Friday not 11:30AM Thurs, I wont be drinking Budweiser with my friends back in Wisconsin but will down a few bottles of Mac's Gold and some New Zealand Wine with my Kiwi Friends. Then instead of sitting around trying to stay warm in the house like we did back home we plan to walk the meal off on the beach then come home and play some games. Maybe will do like Cindi and get on the wii for awhile. Cindi, hopefully you and your kids holidays are special even though they will no doubt be different. Also Happy Thanksgiving to everyone else. Eat Drink and Repeat.

We're having dinner at the casino with my parents and my brother and his wife. My kids and grandkids can't make the drive up here until late tonight so we're having our big turkey dinner with them and my nieces and nephews, parents, siblings... on Sat.
So...tonight it's Odawa in Petoskey, MI for the buffet! |

Heading up to the Army post to see if the chow hall has a fine spread for Thanksgiving. :-) Then will go shopping in Wiesbaden because it isn't a holiday in Germany so everything is open, and the Christmas market opened up two days ago. Woo hoo! |
