I think this approach shows due diligence on the part of dpchallenge. No, it is not foolproof, but it is no longer a wide open free for all, either. Further it does not detract from the image in any way as a watermark would. |

If she doesn't, I will. :-)
I own all of the music I listen too, and I have the software license for all applications running on my PC's - oh, and I shoot most of my own photos. :-P |

(yeah, so i've not been around much...)
anyway... i like the overlay, but i agree with an earlier comment that it would be nice to remove it for paid up members. or maybe add a bit field to the database so you could turn it off for images you upload... leave it up to the owner.
but, all that said, i'd rather have it than not... |

The Overlay is not on your own images when YOU view them, nor are they on your workshop images (suitable for uploading editable versions for other members).

If the overlay can be removed from all images of a certain scantily clad redhead, then I have No Further Objections Whatsoever. ;-) |

Well I voted to get rid of it, but thats my own personal opinion and if enough DPC'ers want to keep it we should do so even if thats not a majority to be honest.
Must say though I second you on the due diligence, I've been thinking for sometime now just what an excellent site from a usability and technical point of view this DPC is. A lot of good ideas go into the creation of this site and unlike a lot of other stuff in IT its all underpinned by some darn good technical competence. |

Did you have the image, or a single pixel .gif image? That's what I got when I tested it. |

I don't think this effort is worth a whole lot in the long run. You don't even have to have a third party software anymore to grab the images, Microsoft included a very nice snipping tool with Windows 7. The only thing different is that now you have to draw a box around the image. |

Also, the RSS feed that's advertised in each challenge's results page includes the direct image link. It'll only affect the lazy but it sounds like that's a large number of people judging from an earlier thread and the dpc pr. |

uhhhhhhhh, why do you think you have the right to take anyones image & use it for your own personal use ??? I'm totally curious about this..... Cause, what they are talking about won't effect your own images.. But, you seem to be telling this entire community that you "take" their images at will, "use" them at will and you think there's "nothing wrong" with this????? I must have missed something.. |
It's published on a public web site for download (necessary for viewing). Legally, I'd figure it's a pretty safe bet as long as he's not re-publishing it elsewhere. [Converting it to another medium (printing) might be problematic, but without looking it up I'm not sure.] |

Now and then I borrow (not steal) someone else's image to test my own eye. I'll paste it into my editing software to see if it indeed would look better in b&w, or to measure if it really tilts, or even to remove the frame to see how the image looks without it. I think this all falls under the category of using DPC as a learning site, even if my inquiries are idle curiosity -- of if I just want to add a Godzilla. I'll probably do less of that now that right-clicking is disabled.
EDIT: I think people are confused by the survey because they see the word "watermark" in the first line, and therefore think the survey is about watermarking.

this will go down as have other countless copy protection schemes: useless for stopping the pirates/thieves/bad guys and annoying to the legit users. i feel personal and/or non-profit use with all required attributions doesn't require prior permission from the content owner (especially so for digital content) so i guess you can lump me with my CC forging compatriots. a desire to prevent people from using your photographs as desktop wallpapers, house decorations or even real wallpapers without having to beg for permission is pure ego-trip, control mania and the pinnacle of asshole-ness. my two future euro-zone euro cents.
i guess it's a truism that all good things turn to shit given enough time. |

People who want to steal and use pictures will always manage to do it.
My pictures are with the CC-NC licence (Creative Commons - Non Commercial) so I want to let everybody diffusing my pictures. The best solution should be to give an option in the account to set the protection.
For the people who still want to "steal" some pictures (opps I wanted to say borrow) get the firebug plugins and you will access the picture in 4 clicks (right click on the pic, inspect element, right click on the highlighted line, suppress element ... then it's like before).
To protect the pics you should set an unique token to allow the download only once per display. But it will still be in cache... |

Do you have a portfolio or website somewhere where we can view this work? |

I got an old website, not up to date because of a bug in Explorer I was too lazy to track.
You can find a part of my old work here: //www.electronart.fr
Edit : the whole website is CC-NC, so you can also steal the (buggy) code ...

Someone makes the effort to capture a great photo with all the time and expense of equipment, travel, props and processing, then posts it behind a layer to deter theft, with a copyright in the file name itself on a page declaring that it may not be used without permission. You decide to take their legal property anyway without asking... and the photographer is the bad guy?!? Ease of theft or unlikelihood of being prosecuted does not make it OK. Even if your intent falls within fair use, show a tiny shred of respect for the person who created something desirable and ask first. |

Thanks. It is a bit buggy isn't it? Kept getting 'Object Error'.
I was curious to see how many, and what the quality is, of the images you were putting out there for general free use. I can now understand your personal lack of concern for any theft. |

glad2badad : you can use it with Firefox,Opera, Safari or any browser respecting the rules.
About my concern on theft, I just want to diffuse my work. I'll put nearly everything on this website when I'll take the time to fix the bugs. The CC license tells that you have to mention the source of your pic when you are using it. I take this as an advertisement, and I don't really care of what people do with an 800x800 pic...
I also work in computer science, on some open source projects. This is more like a philosophy to share stuff rather than too keep it for myself or putting some nasty watermarks on it.
