So I'm doing my part.

And yes, no matter what, the voter is right - it is their vote and they can cast it as they see fit. Photos end up with the average they end up with. No such thing as underrated or overrated - just rated.

And I promise this is my last post in this thread. But y'all really do suck.

(Just kidding. Needed to vent a bit. Not kidding about the last post in the thread, though.)

I am now convinced it is only a 5.1-worthy shot. I still like it. Quite a bit, actually. Good luck to all!

But look at those favs!! I rarely have a challenge where I get more than 1 fav. So obviously some are appreciating it very much!

I think what you are now finding is what I did a while back. You are starting to appreciate other genres and approaches to photography as an art. (This also results in wild swings in your own scores, as you experiment) What one person perceives an artistic and cool looking effect is seen as a flaw by someone else. I had a little back and forth with several other members prior to this challenge, providing mutual feedback (I don't vote on anything I have given feedback on), and I am really surprised at how low some entries that I thought were pretty good have been averaging. Part of the problem may be that these entries are more creative in nature and many just see them as seriously flawed.

Ok, now this has gotten my curiosity going, so I started voting.

first, it's stupid, but I don't usually vote on free studies. I find them intimidating. (yes, like I said, I know it's stupid)
second, even though I was trying to vote like it was a regular challenge, I started thinking "but this is a free study, the standards are higher." I ignored that thought and did vote like any other challenge. But I have to go ask people how they vote. See ya later; I have to go start a new thread.

Overnight drop of 0.2 which still gets to me (even after 180+ challenges, goes to show how attached one can be to a personally preferred shot) so turned off my scores until the FIRE challenge.
There is definitely a new voting pattern & preference on DPC which I still have to adjust to. That's the DPC challenge I guess,
Off to leave comments and bump scores of deserving shots !!

You have rated 398 of 400 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 9 images (2%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.2563.

I tried something different this time while voting, I let my emotions and my heart have a bigger role in how I voted. I will fully admit that in the past I have been voting technically perfect, eye candy type photos as highest, but this time around I wanted to let my emotional reaction to a photo have more weight. Now... If I can only submit photos with that same mentality :D

i am very attached to this photo so i have been very disappointed. if not for the comment i received from Melethia, i may have self-dq'd. the comment reassured me that it's a great photo, so thank you, Melethia, for that comment. i shall be asking for additional comments when this is over, hopefully from some of the people who have voted me down. i started out at 4.3. at this point, i will feel lucky if i break 5.0, which is sad, because i was very proud of this photo when i entered it.

QUITE happy. I virtually never break 6 in a FS, and this particular image is a DPC no-no......I'm totally in love with it as are my wife and daughter.

I even have an 18x24 of it.....of course, that looks WAAAAAAAAY better than waht it does here! LOL!!!

Do not, I repeat, do NOT judge your image by how it does in a challenge......I sold an image that did a 5.4 in a FS in three days at a local gallery for $250, and the woman could not have been more effusive in her praise. I've won local contests with images that tanked here.

This is a terrific place to learn, and to work HARD on your skills, but you will not get touchy-feel-good warmth.

You'll get kicked around, misunderstood, and generally disgruntled if you put too much stock in your validation here.

If you distance your feelings from the feedback, and really listen and look, you won't find a better place for trial by fire.

Part of the reason I clean house in my local clubs is 'cause I've been put through the grinder here....I've gotten two 4+ scores in the last four challenges I've entered.....but in the last year I've broken 7, got my first blue, and qualified for s Master's challenge. Yet my very first challenge was a high 3.

This place will teach you *so* much, but you cannot take the bricks personally. Pick 'em up, and build stairs with them to keep moving onward & upward.

If this place doesn't do anything else, it'll make you work your @$$ off, and unless you're dead between the ears, you *WILL* learn!

Good luck!......8>)

Excellent advice, Jeb.

i usually take this with a grain of salt, but this time, i think it's because i've worked so hard .and learned so much that i thought this would do better (by better i mean mid 5s). i feel like maybe i gave myself too much credit because i got lucky with the lightning photo, but i haven't made the progress i thought i had.

I may just bookmark this post so I can go back and look at it every time I'm sad about my low scores. This is pretty inspirational. :o)

A really detailed and appreciated comment from Paulbtlw. One of his comments really brought a smile to my face, by reinforcing the cliche, but true "It's the photographer, not the camera".

Stands an outside chance of making my profile page if the later voters are generous.

A hearty thanks to Paulbtlw from me as well.
I haven't hit 5 yet, but with comments like yours it doesn't matter so much anymore!

I'm still very happy, looking like it might be a personal best in a FS so far.
