I haven't been this pleased on the morning after a challenge starts in over a year. And the subject matter is one I have never done well in before!

Yeah I'm disappointed but I have to learn not to push it. Thinking back on it I should have gone with an image from a different day. I keep trying for the artsy shot and think my processing is what keeps me low. Next month maybe just a good sharp image with little processing. |

Usually the free study score thread has a lot more entries about scores in the six or seven range. To my eye, there are multiple images deserving of such scores. Low scores can be discouraging. Worse, it is possible that receiving low scores could sway some entrants to vote lower than they might otherwise. Funny thing is, a lot of the interest and voiting in a free study is from people who entered the challenge. Unfortunately, giving low scores in reaction to receiving low scores could perpetuate and worsenes the cycle. (Of course, that is speculation unsupported by evidence.)
On the other hand, there is a chance it could work in the other direction as well. Maybe it would help for everyone posting in this thread to make an effort to vote today or tomorrow and to vote appropriately high for deserving images. Higher scores don't cost anything. Let's break out of the slump together. |
I like your thinking!!!
As for me, my score has been sinking, sinking (come to think of it, it's kind of like my nightmare challenge photo) all morning.
So if I'm deserving of 1s and 2s and I'm not going to win anyway, I might as well award everyone else with high marks!!!! I'll start now. |

Why not just give them the vote you think they deserve, whether it be high or low or somewhere in between? |

Don't worry, I will. But so far, IMO, I haven't seen anything that deserves a 1 or a 2 and lots of things worthy of 7 or more!!! I don't get it.

Happened to me too and on an exceptionally sucky shot that finished at around 4.1, so you're not the only one!

I had a question for everyone - when you vote, do you vote on the picture at hand not taking into account the other photos in the challenge, or do you vote in reference to the other photos in the challenge? (I hope my question makes sense). For example, I think my Free Study photo is MUCH better than my Animals in Motion photo, but my Animals in Motion photo is doing better than my Free Study photo. My Free Study photos never do that good, and I was wondering could it possibly be because they are in the midst of some amazing photographs in the Free Study, therefore bringing down my score? I wonder if the same photographs were entered into other challenges, would they still get the same votes?
It is interesting to see how the voting goes depending on the challenge. My 2nd highest score I have is for the Bokeh challenge, yet I HATE this photo and don't understand why it received a 5.6? When other photos that I liked much more received far less of a score.
So, I don't know really where I am going here - I guess I am just ranting. I think I have come to accept that voters have much higher expectations for the Free Study challenge, and my scores will always be lower in Free Study in comparison to other challenges.

Normally I don't post in the forums but, in this case I feel that I need to.
During my last nine challenges I scored 5.6-4.7 = Ordinary
In this challenge I really destroyed a pic with very heavy tonemapping, oversaturated and also overdid the noice reduction.

Seems that the only thing You need to do is to really f***-up our pic to get a score.

I would put money down on MOST people voting in relation. I know there are a few people that let every image stand on its own, but it's simply against human nature not to judge by comparison.

Stats: You have rated 435 of 436 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 9.0345.
Having just voted I am impressed with the quality of the entries.
Going through this thread and reading what is happening to a lot of scores, (mine Included 4.4) it would appear that a lot of the voters are looking for the way out of the box images rather than stock type photos that could be entered in any of the challenges during the month. Well my humble opinion is that the Free Study quality here outways this trend.
Maybe the processing should be raised to expert for Free Study. |

I am still in shock about my photo. I think I really would like someone to send it to to see if my computer screen is totally f...kd up and they are seeing something completely different from what I am.
Cos I could have sworn blind I had a high 6 for this one.

I am disapointed in my score, and not receiving any comments as to why I am being scored so so low. My animals photo is doing better, and it is a worse photo. I just don't understand. I was really hoping to beat my last challenge score, since it has been around a year since I entered a challenge. I guess I won't beat it though.

Count me in the low group. Had a 5.5 last night when I went to bed which I was OK with. Maybe I went a little too dark? No comments yet so I have no idea what is going on for sure.

My Free Studies have not been scoring well lately. Not enough bold, bright colors.

You gave an AVERAGE score of 9.0? Those could end up getting tossed out by the tabulation system which checks for skewed voting (too many high or low scores). But thank you for taking the time to vote on all of the images.
