2 fantastic comments :) ...not such a fantastic score. Hope it goes up to a 5.63 so at least I can raise my average.

ETA: it dropped me an entire .1 just in that one vote

And another 1! So that is two scores of 1 in a row, without comments. :( freakin trolls.

i've written to the sc before asking if they could set it up so that any vote of a 1 or a 2 would have to accompany a comment ..
there would be less than 1% of images i've ever seen that would warrant a score that low ..
and then you see the most amazing photographs with 1's and 2's ..
IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL .. LOL .. !!!

What YOU would give a 1 or a 2 isn't what someone ELSE would give a 1 or a 2.

I don't understand why people a) don't understand that or b) don't want to understand that.

I do not understand why someone cannot: a) realize that at some point the actual quality of a photo DOES mean that by ANY actual standard it should not be getting 1's and 2's and b) realize that they are not the "all knowing and ever seeing" person they think they are

Welcome to the wonderful world of public voting.

There is nothing wrong with smelling like a carp.

Er...make that a live carp.

Got as high a a 5.75 and now getting a lot of "just ok" votes. This one is rather an interesting experiment for me.

Quality does not give you automatic immunity from low votes. People vote based on their personal taste. We see it happen all the time with street shots, horror, lensbaby, blur... Nothing wrong with the quality of these shots, yet comments are often "sorry, not my thing".

Could be technically perfect wildlife shots and bug macros are not everyone's "thing".

Unfortunately, the camps of "you should vote based on technical merit" and "voting based on personal taste is perfectly fine" will never get along :D

they get along quite fine in my world. I vote on technical merit and personal taste. Technical merit can get you up to a 7, to go any higher, it has to appeal to me. Well, not necessarily appeal to me, because there have been photos that I really don't like--but they made an impression.

I didn't mean they don't get along within a single person, I mean that there always seem to be two distinct groups battling it out in the forums all the time.

We all have our own personal voting patterns. Some people just like to think they have the right/mission to have said voting patterns become the only voting patterns possible.

200 votes between the freestudy and my Trees entry and I have exactly one comment. I hate to say it but its bugging me. :(

naw... I don't really think so. I think it just boils down to the same old argument of people being tired of getting 1s. I just got one a few minutes ago, and it still boggles my mind the wide spread of quality and artistic photos that get lumped into some of these 1 votes. I would venture to guess that there are probably only a handful of people that honestly believe that Judi's image deserves a 1. edited to add: it got one, btw.

anyway, that's beating a dead horse. But the 1 brought me to

I've been using the free study to experiment with odd shots. Next month maybe I'll do something more straightforward.

We're human, we're always going to hate being shown/told/reminded that our work isn't resonating with everyone. We're always going to hate low votes and scores. It's the nature of the beast. Nothing, NOTHING, is ever going to assuage that. Ever.

It's part of putting our work up for public consumption and voting.

The sooner we, as a whole, simply decide to accept the anomalies and votes from every end of the scale, the better off we'll all be.

it's around my average i think, so that's a little meh. i'd like for it to be higher, but I think my shots have been improving, and that's the goal for me.

Anomalie! That was a great film--Audrey Tautou!!

Anyway, some voters are in the review/alter their votes process just now: no additional votes, but 5 iterations up in my score (+ 0.05ish)

There is no camp of "you should vote based on technical merit". If that camp truly existed, we would not be seeing low votes on styles like those I mentioned previously. The results simply do not reflect that people are voting this way at all.

What I mean is, those who scream bloody murder at seeing their razor sharp image of [insert subject of choice here] get hit with low votes, are the very same people who are in the "voting based on personal taste is perfectly fine" camp when it comes to styles they don't personally like - regardless of quality! Again, there are no two camps.

I don't like it, and it can be hard to take at times, but that's just the way it is :)

Maybe the voting doesn't support it, but the threads do. How many times have you heard, "This can be a 1, it's technically perfect!" or some variation thereof? I see it all the time.

A big jump from the early going, but the score will never recover due to the early lowball votes.

Uh-huh, and they're the same people who will turn around a slap a low vote on a technically perfect street shot, horror, dark, lensbaby... the list goes on. Why? Answer: Because they don't like it.

I have no idea how you think that you know everything about everyone elses methods of voting! How do you know? Do you have a crystal ball? Telepathy? are you a god? Please tell me, I want to know!
