That's it...hope i didn't sound rude for anyone and commented too "wrong" as a newcomer. That is a lot of photos heheh, some of them really great! It is a pleasure learning so much at the threads, entering the challenge and commenting and receiving comments! Good luck to you!

I appreciated your comment very much, including the suggestion for improvement.

I'm also pleased that my score has risen out of the 4's all the way up to 5.3 something!

Great effort pedrobop, and many thanks for your comment, much appreciated.

After the initial trolls did their damage, there was a steady but slow climb to the high 5's. Let's hope no-one rattles their cages again, but the scores should pretty much stay where they are now.

Thanks to those that commented, always great to get some feedback

wow--if this holds it will be three entries above my personal worst, rather than the new record low personal worst it started out to be.

and my first ever Favorite during a challenge...

More importantly, however, is that 4.99 is still less than 5.0--I get to keep my spot on the rock, and am still Pizza-Eligible!

(and what the heck is the wish list thing--whatever it is, it is my first one)

It means they wish it becomes available as a print so they could buy one.

Thanks! I just (no kidding) ordered a pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, extra cheese, extra large Garlic Jim's pizza. This challenge entry thing is gonna get fattening. I'll be keeping that rock warm.

and Good Luck to All.

My image is doing the final day "drop like crazy while the last minute trolls get their licks in" thing. Dropped almost a full .1 so far....

Same here, after a few days of mostly decent scores, there is suddenly a flood of VERY low votes.

I'm sure someone has done a thesis of troll behaviour. By my reckoning they seem to be awake on roll over periods and only seem to vote on the first and last days.

normal, when the challenge vanish there is an anti troll routine.

I hate to say it but the way the winners of this challenge sorted out shows people dont really understand the concept. The winners and top 20 were all GREAT shots but less than half of the those are really bokeh shots in my opinion and several truly amazing bokeh shots were way back in the pack. Oh well. At least it wasn't my personal worst in the end, just the second worst.

I noticed how most of the top 15 or so photos were nature shots with natural light. I think people really voted against circles of colored light.
As for what is and isn't "bokeh"... unless DPC can provide a reasonable definition to go with it, maybe "Bokeh VI" should be avoided -- or at least renamed.

Google's your pal here ( so is wikipedia )

Bokeh (derived from Japanese, a noun boke , meaning "blurred or fuzzy") is a photographic term referring to the appearance of out-of-focus areas in an image produced by a camera lens using a shallow depth of field. Different lens bokeh produces different aesthetic qualities in out-of-focus backgrounds, which are often used to reduce distractions and emphasize the primary subject.

Rerefnced from //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh

There are a lot of nature shots in the top 20 since they are examples of out-of-focus backgrounds used to emphasize the primary subject. I find that bokeh is better in good quality light and natural light is best.

I see no reason to rename the challenge or cancel bokeh vi. I do see need for reasonable discussion to clarify what bokeh is. That's a great reason for having discussion forums like this.

Dig a little deeper on google and you will find there is a secondary concept(and frankly a far more interesting one) in which the OOF areas of the photo become integral to the impression, emotion or feeling of the shot, drawing the viewer beyond the subject and into the deeper story of the image or lending additional impact to the main subject(like that famous shot of the sailor kissing the nurse with all the OOF people in the background). It is this second concept that is very poorly understood by many and was the primary focus of my comments.

Bokeh is far more than just a smooth OOF background that makes your bird or bug stand out clearly and that is what many people don't seem to get about the concept.

I'd really be interested in seeing your breakdown of this.

You seem both specific and elaborate in your commentary about Bokeh.

I have always found it to be a somewhat elusive and ethereal concept, and the threads at the time of the Bokeh challenges always seem to be all over the map.

Possibly a whole Bokeh identification/learning thread?

I would definitely be interested in seeing your pick for the top three representations.

To me, it seems that natural light is about the only way to go for good Bokeh.

I was surprised to see how much of what I would consider to be decent Bokeh was produced in this challenge with inside, provided light.

I must admit, I do get a certain twisted amusement at the exasperation that runs amok in the threads that accompany the Bokeh challenges.

I think we're destined to have one every so often just for that amusement factor.....8>)
