Okay......new rule:

LARRY isn't allowed to use borders.......or Barnes & Noble, either!

I don't see whats wrong with borders at all. I seem to get called out for mine a lot lately, but I don't care, IMO I like the effect they can have in complimenting a shot and keeping it contained against the background of the site.

There is a reason why people FRAME photographs and artwork, the border sort of mimics that.

If you don't like it then score it down, I think getting rid of them would be a bad move.

I think you yanko'd me!

haha what does that mean?

Just a little border skirmish.

Borders might enhance photographs - especially those that are lacking in something. But I find that I vote them down - for instance Achoo's blue ribbon shot just got a 6 from me. I felt it was overbearing and partially hid the subject of the photo. Luckily for that photographer, no one agreed with me. However, I do vote down overbearing fames. I think that's the key, if you don't like it, vote it down.

I thought Doc's border was exceptionally effective, actually. Put that image against the neutral gray with no border and it becomes denatured, less effective. The use of heavy top & bottom and very thin side borders has the effect of compressing the perception of the image, making it flow out horizontally in both directions, perfectly complementing the actual, dynamic flow of the image itself.

I remember noting to myself when I voted on this that the border was exceptionally well done. Funny how we can see it so differently :-)

Isn't that part of photography? Being able to choose a frame/border/mat that is flattering to our images is part of what we do! Vote the image based on how you feel about ALL the choices the photographer made...not only composition, image technicals...but, frame and title as well.

I have just sold three prints in a local art gallery...they were matted and framed. Do you think that the frame helped to sell the image? You betcha...it's the whole package.

yeah your right some people really take their border-mania over the edge sometimes, but so are some doing by using HDR/tonemapping, neat image, adding noise jadajada, the list of overdone things of dpc (considering PP stuff) is long and continuously growing bigger...
I for one find borders really helpful and appealing sometimes, as long as theY're subtle enough to not fill more space than the actual picture. lol
what i really do hate are colour borders, there's nothing worse than color borders. ever. i say: ban color borders! ;)

RE: Borders

Haven't read any of the thread, but I recommend we build a giant, barbed wire, electrified fence to keep out the trolls.

Wouldn't that also keep IN the ones that already dwell in DPC's dark corners?

That's why, after the fence is constructed, we implement our scorched earth policy.

Like they're leaving anyway. Might make it easier to hunt them down. Although that's made difficult by the inability to agree on what a troll looks like.

I'm sure it's been said, but I think borders will eliminate themselves from winning entrants; no wait, they already have.

Even if they are subtle and perfectly complement the content? ;-)

Sometimes I can go "overboard" (over-border?) with them ... not so much lately though ...

I think uniformity is key. We should have only one legal border and it should be automatically applied to the image upon uploading. I recommend this one:

Actually, this isn't a bad idea. I think if there was a uniform border beyond everyone's picture, it would help eliminate the gray problem. I still think though that people could apply there own border if they wanted.

Actually, everyone DOES get a border automatically now. It's only one pixel wide, but hey... :-)

Something I asked about before was having background color choices when you submit your challenge entry. Many times I wish we had either white, black, or a dark grey background available instead of the DPC neutral grey.

I think the best way to show support (or lack of) for borders is with our voting. I don't care for those big borders and if I'm bouncing between two adjacent numbers I'll pick the lower one if the border is overdone.

Leave the borders alone!!!!! *cries*
