I just boldly stuck a yellow one on my profile page.

Is there some sort of tacit agreement about giving these special awards to the contestants during voting and declaring publicly afterwards? So as not to be influenced by whatever else the picture may have garnered...

that's what I do, but I'm not sure anyone else does that.

so how many seperate awards do we have now? We have the posthumous ones, the real ones and seemingly a lot of other ones... Isn't this diluting the original premise of the posthumous awards?

There's an original premise?

04/20/2008 11:46:09 AM · #1132
I don't think any premises are in danger. The Posthumous Ribbons remain a very prestigious award. The others that have come along are also coveted when received, regardless of whether they are pre or post challenge rollover. It's nice to visit this thread and see the various photographs that have caught the eye of a few if not the majority. I always enjoy seeing what gets posted here. The more the merrier in my book!

Yes, and it forces people to think about the quality of each award on its own merits, instead of automatically giving a mystique to any ribbon. I like that. :)

And I must caveat my response with the notion that Posthumous ribbons are nice and all, but seeing as how I can't buy one (I've tried - Don keeps getting new lenses, I don't get any ribbons) that maybe they're just a tad overrated. :-)

I'm creating this thread to encourage people to show, week after week, challenge after challenge, their preferences for different photos than the ones winning DPC ribbons. I think it's important to give some visibility to other works not aligned with the mainstream taste, and give support to photographers with different views and approaches to photography.

So, after each challenge, you are encouraged to post here your personal winners, photos that did not won a DPC ribbon and are not align with the masses taste, but won your heart instead.

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference. Let̢۪s show some.

A warm comment in a photograph can do a lot.
Jorge.

PS: Please notify the owner of every photograph posted here, and let him or her know about your support.

I guess this is where it all started (the big bang of ribbons)

as to me - I'm just happy that a creative photographer like De Sousa even looks at my pictures because some of them are posted here

Seems to be the best way to stay objective about it.

Not in my book! I get all excited when he leaves a comment. I can't imagine the euphoria I might feel by receiving a posthumy ribbon.
I'm fairly sure the majority of people enjoy being noticed. That's simply all these other awards are doing.

I like the concept in general. the masses may have voted you in the 5 range, but somebody out there likes your piece.

my little 'awards' arent' ribbons per-say- more or less little statues that say "hey I love your photo keep up the kickbutt job and take more shots for me to enjoy" :) :-D I noticed your image and it has its own unique beauty to it- (hehe thus the cute hullahoops) *LOL* :)

First Draft of the PostLumie:

Still trying to figure out how to "give" this to someone, etc. And still trying to figure out if this is a suitable award design. Trying to use this to seem "luminous"

how about this?

you are free to have it if you want the original file, pm me and I'll email it to you. I just made a selection of the flash and then filled w/ white on another layer and used outer glow layer styles. As I see it here, might be better to be saved as a jpeg on gray rather than gif file as the right hand side looks a little goofy.

THANKS!! You gave me a good idea on what to try--your take is definitely better than mine. I will play some more with my larger original (and learn a bit, in the process). But I may still take you up on your offer :-)

Cheers

I didn't vote on Water. Thank you for sending me right to the best entries!

(and thank you for the recognition. I hope you enjoy my macro, too. Mr. DPC Voter is decidedly NOT enjoying it)

Right now you'd need a Macro Lens to read my score - GRIN!
