A gave out a rare 10 to one of the photos. It is simply outstanding and IT IS using a filter of some kind. I am still voting, but there are a number of OOF/extreme blur photos which don't seem to work well, but overall the selection of photos are very nice. |

I don't know how to tell OOF images in this challenge! I don't vote for Focus, I vote for overall image... wait, I didn't start voting yet, but I will vote for the overall image when I start voting :)
OOF, DOF... I think irrelevant in this challenge. |

I think many people don't know what impressionism technique is.
I see a lot of pics that don't fit the challenge.
Good luck everybody :) |

You guys want my opinion? No, Well here goes anyway.lol. Why did most go back to the early 1900's to grasp what impressionsim was? Seems silly to me. Today is 2007 and surely we could find a modern muse? I hate all the filters- Its just tacky and effortless. btw- no one likes mine-Don't go hating on me. Just speaking my mind. At least there were not many bird, butterflies, flowers or bees- That's progress.

Well, OK, it's an "I love it, you hate it" kinda thing. Except for three other people. :-) I'm very happy with the picture. Score is irrelevant on this one (to me, anyway, and that is the case more often than not). Just wanted to see how it was received. Now I know. |

When I voted, I did not care HOW the effect was achieved, I cared if it was effective or not. I gave both high and low scores to pictures that appeared to use filters and also to those who used other methods. It takes more than just a filter to make a good photo. That is just one tool- one part of the process of creating the final image. Just like the camera and its adjusements.
My own is locked in averageness for now, but I did pick up one favorite and that makes me happy! We would all like to have a ten score, but if we are honest with ourselves, that is rarely going to happen. This is about learning- by trying what we have not done before- and see what works and what doesn't.

I've lost track of how many people have said they'll vote down shots that "obviously" used software filters. My challenge to you: HOW do you know it wasn't done in-camera? My shot was done in the camera, by putting vaseline on a UV filter (idea stolen gleefully from scalvert in his winning image from the last impressionism challenge). But could it have been a normally sharp image someone applied a software filter to? Sure.
Here's a quick test. Which of these were done in-camera, and which used software? No fair reading the notes!

I maintain you have no idea what was done in camera and what was done in Photoshop or its equivalent. Most of the top 10 from the last impressionism challenge were done in camera. I studied them and found lots of cool techniques that don't involve Photoshop, and I've learned a couple of others from other sources.
So vote based on the challenge theme and whether you like the shot. If you don't like a certain look, fine, vote it down. But please don't vote based on your assumption about in-camera vs. Photoshop filters.
Oh yeah, the voting amuses me greatly. I like my shot a lot, and apparently so does someone else who faved it. :) There's nothing better than getting faves on low-scoring shots.

And Jeffrey, I would guess 1,2 and 5 in camera. 3 could be done in camera, but doubt it in this case. |

Wow...vaseline on a UV filter....that is genius!!
I have been a fan of Impressionism since i was a little girl. I used to draw monet with my crayons on the brown grocery bag. So, yes, i used photoshop filters to create my idea of impressionism of my photo. The scores are low...but i love my pic and my outtakes!!
I'd can't wait to see what picture is urs. |

You're a bad, bad boy. You just put some on a Q-tip. :P The trick, as I learned, is not to put it on too thickly or you just get a blurry mess. In fact, I ended up wiping most of it off.
I should emphasize I got the idea from scalvert's winning entry last go-round.
As to guesses on how I did the shots I linked to above, I'll post answers in a while.

Okay I don't usually participate in these discussions because I don't want to influence peoples voting habits or be influenced by others when I vote. I'm done voting so here goes:
Who cares how people obtain the effect they were looking for? If they did something they shouldn't have the SC will deal with it.
What is with all this talk of filters in PS being bad like people are doing something doing something they should not be doing? The new dark room is digital. Great photographers prior to digital spent hours, developing a print using different dark room techniques to end up with a print that they pictured in their mind when they snapped the shutter. They learned and understood different processing techinques, different ways to mix chemicals etc. to manipulate the technology of their day. If they didn't know how to manipulate the technolgy they had they wouldn't have produced the great photographs. Technology is different today, live with it, embrace it, learn it.
Okay time to get off the soap box. I'm sure you are all glad that I don't do this often.
Oh and my photo is not setting any records here.
