I thought I'd pop in here and mention something that I've said in a couple comments. Maybe it will prove helpful to others, too.
Most of us are used to relying on color to pop our subjects. In black and white, we no longer have this luxury. When we're looking for a scene that works in b/w, we need to stop looking at the world in terms of color. Instead, we need to pay closer attention to textures and contrasts since these are the tools available to us to show off our subjects. I find myself walking around and mentally "turning off" the colors I'm looking at - ignoring and looking beyond them. I think that's a HUGE key to shooting a successful b/w photo.
Any one else have tips like this? Stuff that doesn't involve processing?

Yes. Shallow DoF is your friend. |

This is true, if for no other reason than it blurs out a lot of the messier details that would otherwise distract from your subject.

Rebecca - this is a really good point. B/W is ALL about the light. Dynamic colors will always get the 'ooo - isn't that pretty crowd', but B/W is all about light and how it interacts with the world. The textures and reflections and tones are everything. I am not great at B/W, but when I am trying to shoot for B/W I really try to look more closely at the light.

Actually, one thing that's sort of curious is that the same thing works backwards, for colour photography. At least it does for me. If I discard (or try to discard) colour when looking at a scene, I'm able to concentrate better on shape/line things like that.
I remember reading somewhere about somebody saying that he (I think it was a he) was a B/W photographer who liked to work in colour. That's when I started to think of how to try to see things in B/W regardless of the final version. |

My Day 1 is a cheat, only because I really, really like how it came out in B&W. Taken on 21 April (so only a week or so off).
I can't always shoot every day, but I will try to at least use shots taken in the month of May from now on. Maybe. :-) |

Oh heck, Deb, I've broken that rule twice already myself. :) I see this challenge not just as an opportunity to take shots but also to spend time learning digital b&w conversion techniques, so when I don't have anything current I've been digging out an old image and working with it. Hopefully no one else minds when the image was actually taken, but I certainly don't. |
