 Lit with a reflector (car windscreen type) directly to the right of the flowers, very close to the flowers. A pair of desk lamps aimed into the reflector provided the even lighting. The black background is just an unlit desk (had to drape a shirt over a bright area). I do not own a softbox or any proper lighting gear (the whole student thing), so I improvised a large light source. The reflector was also angled so as not to spill light on the background.

Black and white conversion, channel mixer with red channel. Cloned out a bit of the container in the bottom right corner. Levels and curves to get the contrast and tones right.

Great dynamic range between white and black. Am finding the OOF flower in the back distracting, though. I might consider cloning it out altogether for stronger composition. Just my .02, though. Has arty feel as is.

Thanks for the tips on lighting (out of the box)! I think it'll prove helpful to a lot of us uncreative users.

Very nice job with the lighting. Improvising is so hard sometimes, but it builds character (and saves money) :)

I really like the DOF. I'm such a flower fan. Great line and use of negative space. The lighting/shadows are wonderful to look at.

Fantastic shot, you did it really great, since flower pictures are hard to do in B&W IMO. Excellent contrast and love that crop. Maybe I'll try something with flowers.

I really like the light and detail in this. Not too crazy about the out of focus flower to the left. A tighter crop might make this better.

Wow, this is spectacular. I really like the lines in this one. The gentle curse of the leaves really play off the curves in the folower petals. The lighting really effectively enhances that. Honestly though I'm not sold on the the other flower that goes off on it's own angle, is blurred, and has enough bright areas to attract attention. You may want to think about shooting this with that part taken out. I'll admit it will tough to frame it effectively. Great shot and really very nice lighting.
