I tried selling this one for $10,000 but it didn't fly...

I wasn't arguing but I assume a straightforward Times Square shot could be used commercially. I don't know but out of curiousity I might do a Times Square search on one of the microstock sites to see what's visible in those images. That Times Square fisheye, image was approved at Photographers Direct.

All I know.

Edit: Looks like Alamy has a bunch of TS shots with adds in the bg. How they are allowed to be used is a good question.

I have never sold any of my work but have not tried either. If I do sell something I will sell only a license to use the photo for a specific purpose with no exclusivity. I wouldn't want any confusion about what is being sold!

I'm not arguing either ;) I really don't know. I could see that if you shot a scene with a huge Pepsi billboard, could you resell it to Coca-Cola for use in ad ?

Look at what is done on TV when a T shirt, hat or whatever has a corporate logo/promotional image on it. They blur it.

If a customer really wanted an image that had another comapny's ad in it, there are ways to change them to whatever they want.

Any advice on how or where to sell images? How much do you usually get for them? And what kind of license? This is more for my curiosity regarding the photo business than anything else. Most of my shots are hardly worth the space on my harddrive. :)

What do you mean "...on the outside..."?

Oh, sure, I've sold copies of several of my Challenge entries - no ribbon winners yet - because I don't have any ribbons.

But I and 4 other photographers opened a Gallery last March and quite a few of my DPC entries end up on the walls.

I'm curious about your gallery. I'm assuming that there was some amount of $$$$ outlay as you had to make a bunch of prints and matte them. Do you sell enough to cover that initial outlay (I'm guessing that is part of the risk/reward)?

Oh, sure. There are definitely risk/reward aspects. The rewards come in direct relationship to the amount of labor we put into the gallery. Unfortunately, it just isn't having good quality work. People must become aware that the work is available. So, it is also holding events, advertising, putting posters around, and slowly building up a following. While keeping the overhead way down, of course.

I suppose this is like any other business where there is a tangible asset (prints, mats, frames, etc), you invest in an inventory, and cost it out as it is sold.
