kelli, here's a quick treatment of your shot. i did a multiply layer to tone down the very shiny velvet in the foreground and on the older girls, a screen layer to lighten up the older girls' faces and hiar, and gradient layer to vignette the lower section, as the velvet was quite distracting there. i also darkened the ornament between the two older girls heads with the vignette andmulitply layers.

That looks fantastic Christian. I'm going to see if I can duplicate it. Thanks!!!! My Photoshop for Dummies arrived today (thanks Deb!). I've got some serious reading to do.

Yeah, I squeaked into the top 50% (51 percentile) with my Diagonal shot. And I got zero comments, so do I get one of Melethia's ducky ribbons?

Yep, you sure do! I think I can stick the link here... lemme see...
(And the gif is courtesy of Art/Ken - I just added the words.)

My diagonal gave me a few things.. A 4.5, my third lowest score ever,an average less than 4.9 and, I think, for the first time ever, a comment that I've not actually ticked the "useful" box for.

Now, I'm fairly free and easy with the useful box, I believe that if someone takes the time out to comment on a photo then it's nice to recognise that fact. But, really, if someone can't tell the difference between OOF and shallow DOF and then chooses to leave some sarky comment like "it's nice to focus" that isn't going to cut it in my book. So, no "useful" tick for you. Of course, the commenter who left that gem won't realise what a huge slight me not ticking the box is, but that's life ;)

So yeah, bit disappointed in my scores this week, but I've learnt a few lessons, which I shall share -

1. White means white, not murky grey.
2. Cliche shots with crushed up sweets don't do very well, even if they are technically fine.
3. What looks like a lovely colour shade to you will be rejected by voters as an unintended colour cast.
4. As I should have learnt from simply chocolate, the people here just don't seem to like shallow focus shots very much.

Ha! Team novice is officially in awe of scores like 4.9.

Here's my 4.7 diagonal in which 90% of viewers can't see the second cat, 100% of flies eat shit and the jury's out on whether anyone knows their arse from their elbow.

So thanks for improving our showing :)

Current scores... I can't believe how little votes FS is getting. And, still no comments!

I'm thrilled with life and its confusion.

I've no entries this week. Maybe other Entropians will have something.

Next week I'll be in Pet Portrait though. What with 30 Days of Pets I should have at least some chance of getting a decent score out of that, so long as I can persuade a cat to adopt a suitable pose for more than 1/5000 of a second.

I took a brief gander through the thumbnails in Death and am not entirely sure I want to vote in it, due to the number of dead critters. :-(

David:

I think you took exactly the right lessons away from those two shots.

DPC is a competition where you're trying to convince more people to like your shot than others. If you want to score higher, you have to look at what scores highly and shoot pictures like that. So yeah, backgrounds that look like they should be white really should be white. Shallow DOF is a tricky technique that gets overused, so unless it really adds some zing, it'll get thwacked. I don't think the candy itself was too cliched, but the low contrast is a problem. It also could've helped to have a spotlight effect on the last heart instead of even lighting.

None of that has much to do with what YOU like, though. Do YOU like your shots? Do they make you happy?

Look at my trains entry. I thought (and still think) it looks pretty cool. It got a lousy score, though. Fair enough. People here don't vote highly for toys unless they're spectacular. I'm guessing that's partly because most took the time to go find a real train. Again, fair enough. I also didn't light enough parts to show what that thing was for some folks. I still like it, but okay, it didn't thrill the bulk of the voters. Since it didn't, I won't bother trying to sell it as a print.

As for white backgrounds, almost none of my shots with white backgrounds start out as truly white. Even my light on white entry. I put a 3 clamp lamps with a total of about 350W (!), and each with reflectors so all the light went forward, about 3 inches from my white posterboard background, and I still got this:

Maybe I'm doing something wrong. :)

Finally, don't sweat the one comment you got about not using the same subject for two challenges. Lots of people go out shooting and come home with two challenge entries. I did, in fact, for perspective and postcard, and ended up with two of my highest scores.

You'll also see the same shot taken over and over because, well, it does well. For example, in light on white there was another feather seemingly floating in space.

Blue Moon, you listening? ;)

So hang in there. Keep shooting, keep making yourself happy, and keep asking questions, both here and in other forums.

there was a dead whale washed up on a beach yesterday, and i drove my son and dog out to shoot it in FREEZING weather. i took so long to find it that they'd towed it out to sea by the time i arrived, in the dark. gah. but, on the way home, i had the life shot brainwave, so all is well.

it's strange, my model for the white shot asked how i get these ideas. i just looked at her and said -i dunno. that's the divide between arts and science, i guess. i can't understand her work, how she thinks that way, and she can't get mine. but we appreciate the other's, so that's what makes the world go 'round, innit?

My "LifeII" has 5 nice comments and it's the first morning. One of them from SilverFoxx. Thanks. I'm afraid to look at the score though. I keep my scores turned off so I don't have to get depressed, but I guess that's what team suck is all about. I love it here!
