I agree that post-processing does not usually agree with the voters. My death photo has almost no post ('tis basic, after all), but it just has a lot pixels. Thus naturally a big file. Had to compress quality quite a lot to get it under required size for entry.
BTW - who is entering death and who is entering life? Can't wait to vote on these challenges, especially death (guess I'm macabre). I'm expecting a lot of creative OOB type entries. Or maybe just hoping :-) |
This is the one I was going to enter for death but I was afraid of how the voting would be, so I entered life instead.

I like this effect a lot. I'm really curious to know how you did it. Did you use curves in 'normal' mode? And what does "perspective correction" mean? How is that done? |

I have an entry in Death. It is one of my best shots, in my opinion anyway. We'll see what happens when the voting starts. My shots for this week range from 4.4 to 4.7, and I will be glad when I don't have them on my front page any more! |

Sometimes when you use wide angle, the subject can become distorted. Perspective correction fixes that. In PSP it's called geometric perspective.
The dark ominous effect was done in "curves" under the "brightness and contrast" setting. Once again, I use PSP. I'm not sure where this would be in PS. I think it's fun doing this but voters don't like it. I'm glad you liked it. |

My LOW has finished at a lowely 4.6, really one of the most confusing entries ever.
None of the comments really address why it has scored so low, apart from one person saying they don't "get" it most of the comments are positive.

Has anyone else noticed the new challenge posted this morning? Dirt! That is going to take some creativity... |

light on white really threw me for a loop. It's probably the lowest I've scored a challenge, or at least one of the lowest. I tend not to like shots that don't have a background, and it was just too tempting for most people not to just have a blown-out white background. Plus it was all full of shiny happy stuff. Yuck.
Oh, and there's been a lot of talk lately about troll voting and stepping on people who vote differently. Well, check this out:
my average score for the top 10 entries: 5.7
my average score for the bottom 10 entries: 6.9

Don,
I noticed on your light on white photo that people were very mixed - according to the comments - loved it or well...didn't love it. I think that is a lot more commendable than a frankly boring entry such as mine, where most people were just middle-of-the road about it. Although your entry wasn't my favorite of your portfolio, I still found it interesting. I say keep on truckin' and keep on suckin' 'cause your stuff definitely makes people stop for a second look. |

So go comment on mine! I included the original in the comments. The comment I got most was too pale or OOF. It looks neither to me. I can clearly see the rims of both the top of the glass and the bottom of the glass. What I was going for was just the ale to stand out. Is it really that bad? I showed it to quite a few friends who all liked it (but, we know how friends are). Is what I like really sooo far out of the norm? These are questions that I know can't really be answered, yet they haunt me.
The setup was a light tent with a light coming from the top on one side to highlight the ale.

Ah, you made my day. That's been my goal lately, because, believe me, I've made plenty of mediocre photos that have gotten almost all 5s and/or 4s.

My Bond entry has 2 positive comments and 3 that think it is total crap. Yay!
But you are selling yourself short. Your image is not boring. It has some very good things about it and perhaps some flaws. But which are which depends on who's looking at it. I commented, and I commented on kdsprog's as well.

Thanks for the comment Don. I kind of figured that some monitors would not see the glass, but I thought it would be a small minority. Oh well. I'm currently sucking along in the following:

Cheering up required.
The apartment I really liked and thought I had turned out to be a non-reality. In truth, I figure the landlord didn't really want to deal with an American tenant. That's his right, though I do find it interesting that he's currently living in the United States....
So... back to the drawing board. There was a place I looked at early on - decided against it because it smells very musty and the bedrooms are not big enough for my furniture and it has a very narrow spiral staircase (I'm a klutz). But I'm going to take it. Part of my furniture will go in one bedroom, the rest in another. It will be interesting. And I'll simply close off the basement as best I can, and fill it with Lysol on a daily basis.
The bummer - it was carried on the housing office books for a base that closed. So now it has to be reinspected by the housing office here, and the soonest that can take place is December 14th. Sigh. I am SO sick of living in a hotel... I'm starving to death here. No restaurant, no food sources. I do have a fridge (no freezer) and a microwave, but no dishes or utensils.
Sigh. I'm so bummed. I'd go shoot pictures for fun, but it's dark already (at 4 pm) and it's raining. So I think I'll just sit here and be depressed. Hey, maybe I should go vote in a challenge or two.... heh heh heh.... |

Hey Don, Thanks for your comment. It's good to know that my picture of death SUCKS. Since I'm not on any of the SUCK teams, can I be an honorary member? I would consider myself in good company! |

This was done entirely in curves. I'll send the picture of the curve later tonight. Thanks for the comment. |

Murphy's law....
My Bond photo is doing really well (5.2766, superb for me) but alas, as I had FUN with the shot, I am being *challenged*....uh-oh....
Just submitted Life, not the most interesting pic. Dirt sounds like fun. |

I'm not saying that you suck or anything, but you are welcome to join us. There's some room on Team Minus, Team Novice and the OOFers, as far as I can tell.

My heart goes out to you, Mel, sounds like when I moved to Italy for awhile. Place was roomy but stone cold, damp and musty. And what a hypocrite you have for a landlord! How dare he live in the US and not want to rent to an American! |

Ah, poor Deb! Cheer up! You are a great person and wonderful things happen to great people! Keep looking! Don't settle! There has to be something somewhere for you. In the meantime, do they sell microwaveable TV dinners or anything? How about some disposable utensils?

Don, let's get him on Team Minus since we have one member who's never even entered a challenge, and we seem to be the only two out of three who regularly enter!

So. I have my first DQ in "Famous Last Words." Not a shock - I didn't set my camera back for the end of daylight saving time, so the EXIF says I took it 53 minutes after the challenge closed. I raised it as an ethics question, which made for very interesting reading. :) See the thread.
The supreme irony is that since it was running at about 5.3, where it would've been mired in the middle of the pack, a DQ just about guarantees it'll get MANY more views, and I'm guessing many more positive comments. :)
So just to be clear, I'm not at all upset. It was a silly mistake on my part, and it was just a humor shot anyway.
