LOL!

I promised to retire that glass if it won the Color challenge, and I mean to keep that promise : )

Besides, I like my bones intact :-P

I find that entering the challenges gives me something to focus my photography on that week. I am not scoring highly but am getting some great feedback and improving no end! The first thing I do morning and night, is to check into this site to see how my photos are faring, to read the forums and last but not least, to browse through the many fine pics and vote on them and garner ideas for myself.
It is worth every cent I paid to join.. and it is double $$ here in NZ!!

So long as you remember that your doing something right as far as the voters here are concerned.

I've often entered a shot I think will do less well because I think it's a better photograph ...

Personally I try to add something "special" to my challenge shot. For flora, it was some drops of water. For bridges, I tried to take a different perspective. I think perspective has a lot to do with successfully photographing inanimate objects and blind luck (in terms of being at the right place at the right time with a camera in hand) / patience has a lot to do with succeeding photographing animals and people.

A couple of my challenge shots that were almost 6's were pretty boring shots with a glint of light and a star filter. I think in some way, you gotta have a "hook" to get the people's attention, especially if you don't have the most exciting of subjects. Also, I think you should submit any picture that doesn't demonstrate obvious technical flaws. 2 of my 3 top pics, my wife had to coax me into submitting them. One of them got a ribbon even. //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=16630 So you never know.... If there aren't a ton of technical problems, you are likely to get at least 5. What do you have to lose really?

Good luck and keep shooting

Suggestions for getting above 5

Simplify, fill the frame, remove anything distracting, don't center the subject, make sure the shot is in focus, get the basics right, pay attention to the light.
Kodak top 10 tips for better photos

Also looking at my 3 sub 5 shots: 1 is to busy, the other 2 I think one didn't really meet the challenge (a duotone/ tinted shot in B&W) and the third didn't obviously meet the challenge (a empty wine bottle for garbage but a lot of people didn't get what it was) So also, don't confuse/tax the voters, no matter how clever you think you are :)

Suggestions for getting over 6
Edit yourself heavily. Don't accept the first shot you took. Try new things. Push yourself beyond the obvious shot. Think about what you want the shot to show. Look at how you've taken it - does everything contribute to that message that you wanted to show ? What could you change to strengthen it ? Is there anything obviously wrong ? If there is anything that someone can 'hang' a complaint on, it'll probably make your shot suffer. Don't expect something you don't think is your best work to score well - if you can find the flaws, anyone else can. Pay attention to the light.

Suggestions for getting above 7
better make it an interesting photo too! Did I mention light yet ?

You forgot one thing -- get everything in focus. No selective focus because those things tend not to do so well, by that, i mean, getting close to a 7.

Selecting blurring, impressionistic, weird stuff don't work well here.

dont know about 7 but can get some strong 6's as both my and your flora shots proved :)

That's in the members section :) hehe. i think 6's are possible, 7 would be harder, but even 6's i don't find too many with selected focus. Even then it was in the 6's not near 7. I think at least yours have a single flower in focus, i am not sure half of my flora shot is in focus... more like 1/3 is in focus.

Things like this probably won't do well here:

Another thing: Don't do tricky exposures. Someone posted about his photo which was overexposed but i really liked it because it is a very "memory" like photograph -- unfortunately it wasn't viewed as good on here and got 4's.

I know the best way out of fives - don't meet the challenge, take a blurry pic with a lot of grain.

Guaranteed to not be in the 5's.

Perhaps the best way to get out of the fives:

Dumb Luck.

Remember that even though five seems like an "average" vote, only 20% of the Fauna pics broke the 6.0 barrier.

I'm not sure, but I think only one photo has finished at 8 or above, and most challenges have fewer than 5 photos which average as high as a 7.
I've found the most likely predictor of a good-scoring photo is if it's the one I thought about submitting, but didn't...

Theres more than 1 8.

Bods toaster is one, John's flag, and Rackat has two 8s. I think there are also a few more, but they are very rare.

Yeah, I didn't search the database...maybe we could see a graph/histogram with scores from all challenges combined...

I'd like to see if there's a trend in the total voting as well; I'm guessing most of the 8s came earlier when there were fewer entries and voters.

I suspect that we are getting the statistical effect and initial cause backwards. People don't score low to protect the average score distribution...

Surprisingly not: //www.dpchallenge.com/photo_browse.php?view=highestrated though the members challenges have definitely helped here. The fact that 'Frog Eat Frog' averaged over 8 with nearly 300 votes is outstanding.

Bods Toaster shot is the only 8 score that the lowest vote received was a five ( no 1s thru 4s ):)

Johns Liberty and Justice pulled an 8.3 score despite having 7- 1 votes.
