I hate it when people vote 4's. It's like they're in the normal routine of, this image is soft...4.

Ohhh, hah... once ya get around 100 votes it can't drop as quickly. Will slowly bleed down into the 5's rather than just drop.

Sure is a lot of very positive comments for such a mediocre score.

If you are used to 6+ scores, 5.9 seems mediocre, but it's far from. Likely still 75th percentile or above.

If I had left navbar full of ribbons I'd wax philosophical, too.

;-)

I hold myself to a pretty high standard. I expect to get 6+ everytime and I am disappointed, mostly in myself, when I don't. When I do get the sub-6 scores, I am usually satisfied that the higher scoring photos deserved to be higher. There have been occasions when I am truly baffled why my entries didn't do better.

Here are 3 that when compared to the ones that finished higher, I am at a loss as to why.

I left out my Peas entry, I thought it would do better but I was informed that the "ick" factor did me in. So much for baby humor.

You can count my Soft Focus entries as one that, in my mind, should be scoring higher.

I think my dream of having a photo score a 6 or better is nearly un-obtainable now. *sniffle*

But, I'm glad that at least the eight people who left very positive comments like my photo as much as I do. Now if only all the people who don't like it will tell me specifically whats so bad about it so I can do better the next time.

That's a decent number of comments for your score. I'm at 5.5 with only two comments!

Creeping up. It's funny how voting averages can swing so heavily during the day. Last 9 votes have averaged 6.8. 3 before that were 4's.

Mine's edging up too, still lots of great comments, some taking time to really evaluate. I appreciate that.

I seem to be about 15-20 votes behind everyone else posting here.

is it just me or are there a lot of shots in this challenge that are not so much soft focus as they are just plain OUT OF focus?

It's not just you.

From my score, I must have used the wrong kind of stocking.
Should I have asked her to take it off first?
08/24/2006 06:20:42 PM · #174
I'm a little confused about something... in order to achieve soft focus, many have used either hose or gel, right? But the image itself, is perfectly focused? And this is ok, but using gaussian blur in post is not ok and neither is shallow dof?

Not trying to start anything here, I'm just seriously lost about it all. Folk are complaining that images are either sharp, oof or that gaussian isn't appropriate. Just how does one achieve soft focus successfully?
08/24/2006 06:31:38 PM · #175
One SC or another posted a nice tutorial on how to use gaussian blur to acheive soft focus in PP so it is legal in basic (also says in the rules I believe).
