Yep i agree ;) if you invert mine, it's the real image with hardly any manipulation to the color. However, the challenge did say edit to make it look good as a negative ;) |

I shifted my color balance a little bit, and dialed the contrast way up until the image just started to fall apart, then inverted it. I understood this all to be within the challenge and within "Basic." But if you invert it back into positive, it's still recognizable.
There were some submissions I saw that were just straight up and not in the negative. |

I am positve that my negative challenge entry score is going to be much closer to negative than to 10.
I am thus extremely negative about my results...

I just put some Negative outtakes in my portfolio - I'd love to get some comments. They are absolutely nothing like what I submitted so it will not influence any late voting.
Thanks,

I dind't like the major changes which made it completly unrecognizable in positive, the smaller shifts usually added to the picture. |

Then in that case, I expect to see all 8s for my image :P |

I'm back down to 5.48. I think I'm gonna cry. I was ok with 5.5 but preferred it when it was at 5.7. |

My problem is the lack of comments. I'm a fairly horrid photographer, and I'd really love some specific tips. All of the great photos get bazillions of comments, but it's the bad ones that need the help! lol |

Hello Lindsay,
I have 32 comments on my "negative" shot and it is at a 6.14 score. Every comment is a "praise" except one. I would trade off 15 comments for a 7.1 !
Keep shooting and post some "non-challenge" shots in the forums and ask for comments. You'll get lots!

Ken,
hehe.. I'm exactly the opposite, I guess. The only reason I enter is for the fun and feedback. It's a great way to force myself to be creative and also to take a little time to myself. I don't even really consider myself a photographer.. just a kid with a camera.
I've got 7 comments and a score of 5.15 right now.
I will definitely try posting some non-challenge shots in the forum for comments, thanks for the tip! |

I've had more than a few shots come in under 5.15 ! Check my portfolio. 5.15 will beat many of my entries!

I do appreciate the complements; otherwise I'd get discouraged and give up, but I can't improve if better photographers than I tell me what to work on :(
That sweetheart Bear_Music went thru' my past entries and gave me some great help, THANKS BEAR!!!! :D
This one's sitting at 5.3, with 8 complements.... |

You won't believe how fast you'll learn and progress here, by just observing other shots, and from all the incredible tutorials and learning threads. You'll be up there in no time! :D |

My score is in the low fours - not even worth posting exact stats, I am so far out of any kind of contention.
/rant on
I did not put my negative together as something that was supposed to look like a photo despite merely being the negative of one. I had it in mind to let it be a piece of abstract art. The chief complaint seems to be that no one can tell what it is, but I have to wonder why knowing what it is is so important. It's "an image that works well", not "a photo that still looks like a photo". A photo is an image, but an image is not necessarily a photo. So WHY can't a purely aethetic abstract just be appreciated for what it is, rather than criticized because it's not so conventional or what YOU happened to think up? Who cares if you can't tell what it is, so long as it's aethetically cool? LET GO of the notion that you MUST know what it is and instead just take in the shape, the color, the contrast! Just let it be pretty! *sigh*

I agree with you karmabreeze. It does sadden me that people don't like abstracts, but that's life. If you love abstracts and are willing to take the punishment of a low score, good for you. I think I get upset with low scores because I've charged my image with personal energy. Becoming a better artist, i.e. being able to communicate more clearly and powerfully takes a temporary yet painful mortification of this personal energy. How else can we hear and learn from others.

Did anyone else get a "too weird to be considered" comment. I'm at 4.3 right now and my photo is anything but "weird." I'm probably getting 4.3 because it's not "artsy" enough - just pretty much a plain jane, but "cute." I thought comments were supposed to be helpful. |

Point me to the picture after the challenge and I'd be glad to leave a comment. Not sure what weird has to do with anything, weird can be just fine. |

im at a 5.4 now with 11 comments, all of them liking it but about half of them not believing its a negative, which when i step back from it being my pic i can see where others are coming from. But oh well, i may post the original to prove it after voting is done. |

Apparently I'm an eye catcher. As I said before, I'm quite impressed for my second submission.

Frankly, I think a lot of people are suffering because negative images are just... well, ugly.

I have 11 comments too. They're all really positive, although some people didn't quite like this thing or that. That's cool. The way my score jumps up and down I wonder what my number spread will work out; I think it's a loveit/hateit kinda thing.
But I can't argue with anything over a 5 for my first submission.
What's hard are the comments that take issue with something I did intentionally as though it were a mistake. Then I have to remember that if I didn't get across my point in the image, I did do something wrong. And then, not all people see the same things, or have the same taste. |
