Me as well...and it really surprises me how many people here do not see pictures correctly. |

The entire premise of this little bitchy game is flawed anyway, since it's suppossedly done to encourage so-called talented photographers from having their precious little egos dented by criticism in (ironically) an arena designed specifically for their shots to be critiqued. I'm only new to the site and have already seen this topic brought up in several threads. This being by far the poorest attempt to explore it.
I'm sure Ansel Adams would have been the first to say that his work is not above criticism. It is an art-form after all, and will always be subjective. Hell, if the day came that I was surrounded by nothing but sycophantic brown-nosers I reckon I'd have lost the challenge and fun in photography that makes me want to do it in the first place.

I agree...it is "all" very interesting, I wonder how many of us found the image and looked at what we scored and commented? |

i really don't think this is the appropriate context in which to try a personal experiment. i also think that it was a foolish move to make because although the photo is not one of the more popular shots by ansel adams, it is still a well-known piece of work. as others have pointed out, the results of this "experiement" have probably been skewed by confusing users who recognized the shot.
if it was intended as an homage, it was poorly done. if it was intended as an experiment, the control group was out of whack and proves nothing.
to me, this smacks of an ego thing so that you could come back into the forums and say "i told you so."
trying to make people look like fools is a really crummy way to make a point. |

I'm totally brand new to this site (and Ron's was the first post I ever read) and I am what I will term strictly an amateur when it comes to my digital photography - but ya know what, I love taking digitals none the less. The theme of this forum (specifically this post) seems not to be about how one accepts (or not) criticism but more about deceipt. I read the post, and read it again, and while I totally disagree with the method used, I don't think it warrants a lifetime ban simply because (if I understand it correctly) Ron came forward on his own versus carrying the deceipt all the way to the end and it seems that was his intent all along. I give him credit for that if nothing else. Ban him for a month or two and be done with it. If he truly loves digital photography as we all do and knows that everyone is aware of what went on, that will hurt enough and surely embarrass him. I doubt very seriously if this group as a whole would not have recognized a piece of Ansel Adams' work and discovered the ruse so I doubt if his motive was deceitful to the point of trying to win a challenge - except maybe an oddly placed reliance on trying to prove a point. As to criticism of our digital photography, I have been a member of other like-sites and have always felt fortunate to have someone else's opinion but I have to agree I accepted criticism more readily when it was offered as "I believe had the photographer tried ..... the image may be more pleasing or worked better." That type of criticism I can live with all day long and use it to improve on what I love so dear. But a comment such as "The picture is totally wrong because I would have done this ...." I can do without. Unless one is sitting behind me, with camera in hand, and see's the same field of vision I do, then I don't beleive they are in the position to "tell me" I was 'wrong' when the image appears later on. Besides, like most of you, I'm my own worst critic and often delete images my wife seems to like. I can say my digital image was totally wrong because I was the eye behind the camera. Thanks for allowing me to offer my two cents (okay, dime's) worth. I look forward to the challenges ahead .. and Ron, just take the pictures and use the criticism - or not. :) |

How can you tell which image it is? I am curious now as to what vote I gave it. I agree with others that if this was to be a genuine test, it should have gone through SC first. |

isn't this pretty much the same thing that happened in the ansel adams challenge? except that instead of the council it was someone else?
i'm not sayin it was a bright thing to do, but banning or even severe criticism seems a little... off.

I'm with you Ed. At least to the extent that I see some trends here at dpc recently that I am unhappy with, don't think they are for the better. I wish I could find a way to see this exercise as constructive. We need to get back to discussing photography and lay off of all the other stuff. Stop being so concerned with wishing each other happy birthday, and start looking at other peoples photos to offer advice and constructive critcism.

The unfortunate thing about a user deciding on their own to do it is that we really have no proof this was their intention. When Bear_Music approached the SC/Admins with his idea, we knew in advance. When a user arbitrarily submits a shot that is not their own, takes four days to respond with a note admitting it's someone else's shot and is then found to have taken at least one other shot out of the challenge dates, I really have no way of knowing that it wasn't his intention to try and trick everyone and keep it under wraps had he not been caught. Granted, the chances of that are slim when you pick a well-known artist but overall, it doesn't really instill for me much trust in RonBeam. |
