I think we should have a Mole photograph in every challenge. But not done like this. It should be done like the AA challenge we had. It is interesting to see how a well know photographers picture fairs in a challenge along with some of the comments it receives.

With that said, your study is skewed. The photograph you posted was not where near the quality of the original so I would expect to see some comments offering suggestions on what would make it look better.

Slip...nevermind, unHappy Birthday.

Cool: seriously, you want we should stay ON TOPIC?

<-- lowelling even more

What a low-blow... coolhar is definitely OFF my fav photogs list! :-(

I'm with MK! I joined this site to learn about digital photography. This is just a childish game. It pretty much p's me off that people are more concerned with pranks than getting serious about what "most" of us love to do.

I agree, this would be an interesting exercise. Certainly not done like this one has been though.

Perhaps I am one of the few - but it seemed to me as if Ron meant that all criticisms should be taken with a grain of salt (not considered the end-all-be-all), and all commentors should realize that there isn't always just one way to do something.

I didn't think that he was attacking photographers nor commentors, but simply offering a bit of insight and thought. It seems highly unlikely that one would expect to forever claim an Ansel Adams work as their own.

The point is he stole the work! With the INTENTION to decieve!!

Re: coolhars'post, I just wondered how many comments the average DPC'er makes during a challenge?

Reason being, there seems to be some agreement in the thread that comments (when done properly) are helpful, but I noticed in other threads that ppl were finding obviously low scores* (1's in some cases) being voted on their photo without any comments being made. Surely this is worse in an environment that's supposed to encourage learning than some clumsy and unflattering comments?

[*Obviously this is easier to do early on in the voting when there's only a handful of votes been made and you can easily calculate what score was just placed when the number of votes goes up by one]

Hey I love calibrating my monitor. It gives me a great deal of pleasure.

ban him for a month, plain and simple. DPC MUST take the stand that is NOT acceptable to use others' photos in challenges. I would be personally offended if you used my image w/o consent and pawned it as your own. its a disgrace to all artists, and is one of the core reasons that any journalist would be fired outright for plagiarism. trying to change the world can be a nobel deed, but there are more proper avenues for attaining this. What you did was just plain stupid.

Oy.

I agree with Dave. Something should be done.

I may not be understanding the OP's intent correctly but it seemed to me that he was saying that some of our comments are not valid because the maker does not know as much about photogrpahy as the person who submitted the entry. I can't agree with that. I/we (the ones who comment) are your intended audience when you put a picture up here at dpc, either in a challenge or in your portfolio. The site is about learning/teaching. I/we are your teacher, like it or not. Just as we complain about the tastes of the voters we must acknowledge that they are always right in selecting the ribboners. And so it is with comments. I/we are the commenters and we are always correct, for after all is said and done, we are your audience. We are the masses, and our collective judgement of your work is always correct, at least on this website.

Always remember that this is just the internet, and not the real world.

EDIT: Please disregard this post if, sometime in the next few days, you see a thread about how you all are treating my High Contrast entry.

What is lowelling? I may want to learn how to do that.

Well done Ron. Point taken. Now, how many 1s, 2s and 3s did he get?

Just wondering is this copyright infringement on his part?

I read through his statement, and was disappointed! However, if in fact DP asked for verification, Great Job panel. The lesson here this individual tried exploiting seems acedemic, something everyone could figure out for themself. In that case there leaves room for an exaggerated defense on his part. Not saying I think that happend, but it certainly makes you go hmmmm.....

Well GL to the panel and the guy, for deciding what happens next. I still love the sight no matter what.

While I think it was an interesting experiment to conduct, just to see what the comments were, I think we should be trying to encourage comments rather than frighten off commenters. This exercise feels like it could reduce the number of comments because it was done in secret and the is the possibility that peoples comments could be thrown back at them.

I like the idea of the committee entering a "dummy" photo in each challenge - as long as every one knew this was going to happen, and peoples comments on the photo were only made visible to themseleves (ie were not made public after the challenge). It could be an effective way of improving our comments and expanding our ideas of what constitutes a 'good' photo.
09/11/2005 09:57:49 PM · #67
If you participate in these challenges you strive to improve your photography ability to the degree necessary to ribbon. If you vote does it not also make sense to strive to be a better evaluator of photographs? Can you be a good photographer without both of these skills? Ron was making a point that even a great photographer would do pretty average here! Explain that one?

So this was my comment on the supposed photo!

Captivating. Photos like this one fill my heart with faith, and love. There is nothing here I could possibly find faulty. However it would be disappointing to hear that you didn't set the camera down and absorb the moment for all of us who can't. Great Job, and TY for entering

Pretty good huh, I feel like a genuis commentor now! Ha ha ha!

And thats for "Ansel" of course. <----(i know he's watchin) LOL

I personally feel that this was a stupid stunt, but I don't think that he should be banned for it. He made a mistake and its over. Don't do it again, shame on you! hee hee

.text He made a mistake and its over. Don't do it again, shame on you! hee hee.[i]text

Problem is, is he didn't make a mistake he did it on purpose. Beside taking a picture of somebody elses picture, is a pretty big darn mistake, and maybe the panel should let him know just how big it was. And also, this guy knew there was risks, which in turn tells me he is not that serious about remaining a member.

Isn't there also a DPC rule that all images must be taken with a digital camera?

For sure, this image was not taken with a digital camera.

I just wish he went to the SC first before doing anything like this. Now the SC have to decide what the consequences of his actions are. They will have to so it doesn't happen again.

I do think it would be interesting to have a (MOLE) photo as stated earlier. It would be neat to see how many people might recognize. But I would want to be made aware if such a photo was hidden in a challenge.

People make mistakes.... Lets move on.
09/11/2005 11:18:29 PM · #74

I really disagree with this mole thing people are talking about. For #1 the original photographer would probably have to be made aware of it, which could prove challenging, and pointless.
#2-I have seen better photographers here than anywhere else. In Heida, kiwiness, librodo, jmsetzler, and bradP, and thats to name just a few.
#3-and collectively where is the point. It compromises the integrity of the site, and that should never be done, or risked.
