friends, it is with a heavy, heavy heart that i am making this post.

this morning, my father called to tell me that his nephew, my cousin, a beautiful, tormented soul, decided last night to silence the demons that have plagued him throughout his life. he has left behind an innocent 6 year old son, an estranged wife, and an extended family that will never completely understand just how bad bad can be.

at this time, moreso than thoughts and prayers, i would ask each of you to take time to live in the moments you are given, and not to take anything for granted. if you know of someone who is hurting, don't wonder about them, but try to be there for them. if you see someone who needs a hand, offer it. you cannot save the world, but you can make it a better place if you simply live in it caringly.

as i don't know what my family is going to need in the days and weeks to come, i don't know when i'll be back, but i'll be thinking about all of you. as all of you travel, may the peace that passes all understanding find and fill your lives, and may you each find some small way to share the joy that you find along the way.

and, more than anything else i could ask for, if you might have images meaningful and inspirational, could you please post them here?

thanks,
skip

Sorry for your loss. It's most difficult when it is not expected. My thoughts and prayers are for the family.

Skip I am so sorry! It is a terrible time for you and your family and I hope you will all helpn each other particularly the parents or siblings of your cousin. As someone who also lost a wonderful young man who decided his life was not worth living, I do know what you are going through. Just remember that it was his decision and try to accept that he had a right to make that choice even if it is wrong in other's eyes.

If you need any support, even from such a long distance, you have it here.
love and thoughts with you all

Sometimes we feel alone.
The world seems all confused,
messed up and blurry....

....and then someone reminds us we have the sun on our back.

Spirit is a fragile thing, easily broken and even more easily overlooked in the confusion of days. Take the time to look, not only far, but deep — and seek the answers that hide within, not the ones that form the surface.

I'm sorry for your family's loss, Skip. I hope your cousin is finally at peace. Struggling with a family member's depression, suicidal ideation, and desperation is extremely difficult for those around him/her. May your family be blessed with strength and love during this difficult time.

Some people have difficulty letting hardships flow over them like water and collect and hold the bad feelings inside untill they can not hold them any longer. We need to learn to recognize those signs and react to those we love...

Skip,
I will continue trying my best to do what you have asked. It is true than many of us will never know how bad bad can be and there are those of us who do and make it through. It was interesting to see how many photos there were dealing with this topic in the decision challenge. Events like this can have a large impact on many people's lives. I am sorry for your loss and commend you on maintaining your usual warmth and positivity during this time of hardship.

Yet tears to human suffering are due;
And mortal hopes defeated and o’erthrown
Are mourned by man, and not by man alone.

Skip,
I can't imagine what you or your family are going through at a time like this, but do want to offer my condolences.
Little else to say that hasn't been said already here.

Family and loved ones are among the most important things each of us have.

Skip - Losing a member of the family is a tough thing to deal with, yet in the midst of that you still find the time for some eloquently spoken words of wisdom for all to consider...

Some time ago I added you as a favorite photographer - now I wish there was some way to add an asterik to mark you justifiably as a fine human being. May God bless you and your family in this time of need.

As you say Skip, we all take so much for granted and sadly, it often takes a tragedy such as this to make us realise that fact.

My family suffered a similar loss many years ago which left scars that will never fade.
My thoughts are with you...take care.

I know how you feel, the woman with the glasses, just lost her son this year. He killed himself and it was nice to see her smile again.
