While in the Marines I had been given orders to transfer to Beruit in late '82, the Marine whose billet that I was to fill decided to extend his tour of duty there. I ended up going to Okinawa... I spent 82-83 in Japan, while the Marine who's billet I was to fill was killed in the '83 Beruit bombing. Memorial day has a different meaning to me.

I served in Iraq and know what the cost of war is truely about and I salute my "Brothers and Sisters In Arms" who have died for our (My) Freedom. Let it Ring! I also salute everyone who has supported the troops and God bless you all. Please view a gallery of what my unit saw in Iraq. This is from a truck drivers view and just a scratch of what I have on digital. Please visit Total Design Concepts click on the Iraq gallery and I hope you enjoy.

| I don't personally have any shots that fit into this thread. However, I am compelled to say that my brother served in Iraq for a little over a year. God bless those that have served and now serve this fine country and God bless the USA. |

Thanks to all the veterans, past and present, for your sacrifices for freedom worldwide.
P.S. I'd like you to meet my father, who served our country during WWII...

I have no appropriate photographs, but I feel it necessary to convey my utmost respect and acknowledgement of anyone who has fought for a just cause, and the same to all soldiers and their families who have fought and died unnecessarily to secure the interests of a wealthy minority.
John Brown went off to war to fight on a foreign shore.
His mama sure was proud of him!
He stood straight and tall in his uniform and all.
His mama's face broke out all in a grin.
"Oh son, you look so fine, I'm glad you're a son of mine,
You make me proud to know you hold a gun.
Do what the captain says, lots of medals you will get,
And we'll put them on the wall when you come home."
As that old train pulled out, John's ma began to shout,
Tellin' ev'ryone in the neighborhood:
"That's my son that's about to go, he's a soldier now, you know."
She made well sure her neighbors understood.
She got a letter once in a while and her face broke into a smile
As she showed them to the people from next door.
And she bragged about her son with his uniform and gun,
And these things you called a good old-fashioned war.
Oh! Good old-fashioned war!
Then the letters ceased to come, for a long time they did not come.
They ceased to come for about ten months or more.
Then a letter finally came saying, "Go down and meet the train.
Your son's a-coming home from the war."
She smiled and went right down, she looked everywhere around
But she could not see her soldier son in sight.
But as all the people passed, she saw her son at last,
When she did she could hardly believe her eyes.
Oh his face was all shot up and his hand was all blown off
And he wore a metal brace around his waist.
He whispered kind of slow, in a voice she did not know,
While she couldn't even recognize his face!
Oh! Lord! Not even recognize his face.
"Oh tell me, my darling son, pray tell me what they done.
How is it you come to be this way?"
He tried his best to talk but his mouth could hardly move
And the mother had to turn her face away.
"Don't you remember, Ma, when I went off to war
You thought it was the best thing I could do?
I was on the battleground, you were home . . . acting proud.
You wasn't there standing in my shoes."
"Oh, and I thought when I was there, God, what am I doing here?
I'm a-tryin' to kill somebody or die tryin'.
But the thing that scared me most was when my enemy came close
And I saw that his face looked just like mine."
Oh! Lord! Just like mine!
"And I couldn't help but think, through the thunder rolling and stink,
That I was just a puppet in a play.
And through the roar and smoke, this string is finally broke,
And a cannon ball blew my eyes away."
As he turned away to walk, his Ma was still in shock
At seein' the metal brace that helped him stand.
But as he turned to go, he called his mother close
And he dropped his medals down into her hand.
John Brown - Bob Dylan
The only two relatives of whom I know that served in WWII were one Fred Rodwell, a yorkshireman that was on board one of ths ships that sank the Bismarck, and a (more distant) relation that went by Field Marshall Bernard Law Montgomery...fortunately both survived.
Commiserations to anyone out there who has lost a loved one to the scourge of war.
Alex.
PS: 'God' Bless EVERYONE...EVERYWHERE.

I'd like to request (belatedly) that this thread be kept to its original purpose of thanking those who went off to war (volunatrily or otherwise). This thread is not the place for political discussion of the justness of the wars they were sent off to fight.
Thanks,
Terry

Although in the challenge I was told to "go voice your patriotism somewhere else". I will still post it here. It is too dull due to my inaccurate monitor. Enjoy.

My father (Army Air Corp and Air Force)served during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. I (Air Force) served from Vietnam to the first Gulf War. My son is now serving as a Marine, he is still in training but I'm sure he'll see his share of action as a Marine.
I to want to thank all military, whether they served 4 or 20+ years, peacetime or war. And we must not forget the family members that support them.
No pics to post.

"Anchors Aweigh"
Stand Navy out so sea, Fight our battle cry
We'll never change our course, So vicious foe steer shy-y-y-y
Roll out the TNT, Anchors Aweigh. Sail on to victory
And sink their bones to David Jones, hooray!
Anchors aweigh, my boys, anchors aweigh
Farewell to college joys, we sail at the break of day-ay-ay-ay
Through our last night on shore, drink to the foam
Until we meet once more
Here's wishing you a happy voyage home.
I remember singing that every morning at 4 o'clock.....the joys of bootcamp!
June
I'm gonna toot my own horn :P This is me on the left on my ship in the Arabian Gulf when the war started (those are patients) and this is me a couple weeks ago :)
