You have commented on 71 images (14%) in this challenge.

Working through again. Have adjusted many scores up on my curve (someone's gotta win).

By the votes and comments I am receiving, people either love or hate my image. With so many people stating that they score lower for this type or higher for that type and none of them using the same criteria, I can see why scores are all pretty much in the middle. I'm all over the place - I have parts of buildings, whole buildings, landscapes with buildings, B&W and color all scored high. The same also scored low. For me its the appeal of the image as a whole unto itself as to where it sits on my curve. I'm getting some great comments though!

Darn, I hate being a newbie. Bless you dahkota for pointing this out.

Someone brought up that very question earlier in the thread and here was my response then.

Actually, the description read as follows:

Residential or commercial, rural or urban, abandoned buildings often have unique textures, colors and character. Show us a great photograph of a building that is no longer in use.text

As you can see, there is no requirement that the photos contain colors, it merely states that they "often have unique textures...etc", and the only requirement stated is that we show a great photograph of a building that is no longer in use.

Having run around the countryside looking for things to photograph, I can assure you that the vast majority of things I considered worthy of consideration, had little if any, vibrant colors.

I have completed approximately 25% of the voting, and have seen some fantastic photos, and to be honest, the different hues of grey or brown tended to add character to the buildings.

Hope this helps :O)

The color shouldn't bother you if the shot is well thought out and is a nice shot tech. speaking. Some images look a lot better in B&W and would suffer a lot if it were in color. don't judge a photo because it is B&W but just its quality and creativity.

If someone suspects the shot is not color, right click save as, then take in in PS and jack up the saturation and watch what happens!
I think you would be amazed (if you are being THAT technical).
Most B&W's are RGB and do contain color, as in the case of toned or dual/tri/quadtone images.

I too am getting a little tired of ALL the sepia and B&W photos....*shrug*

It can be great but i think it's sorta a fad....like the masked color saturation of B&W with one object left it's original color.

Are my glasses going bad or is there more than a few out of, I mean soft focused pictures?

Unfortunately I don't think it our eyes. I do believe that for the most part, though, the cause may be from resizing. I know that it took me at least 5 different trys to be satisfied with my final shot. The orginal was RAZOR sharp (the way I like it) and when I resized, it was HORRIBLE. Finally found a good mix of USM and settling for smaller than 640.

This really is something that needs to be worked on. What we're being asked to judge is the final presentation, not the originals. So just because the originals are sharp, I think more attention has be to brought to the finals.

I'm trying to vote fairly--those that are unsharp from resizing get a better score than those that I feel are just not sharp in the first place. Tough determining, though.

I just spend WAY too much time reading through the whole thread and SOOOO wish that one or two of you "big mouths" took the time to comment on my pic!lol...... not because I wanted to critised but because I would have loved to get feedback from you guys... and learn from the "masters"..
I'll take your silence as a "less than 5 for you young lady!" and try harder next time... lol... just to get your comments ;)
04/18/2005 09:00:47 AM · #264

My image is now up for validation after some idiot who prefers to comment as 'hidden during voting' seems to think that I am a retard and would actually put text (from Photoshop) during a basic challenge. At least if you have the audacity to make this kind of comment, remain open as to who you are.

I do not think that the person has a choice on revealing their identity if they make a DQ request for apparent reasons but namely because of your sort of reaction. Furthermore, if there is text in your photo, you should expect that someone would question the validity of the shot. The person who has requested the DQ is likely not the same entity who appears "hidden" in your comments.

Should you ever wonder as to the reasons why some people opt to remain anonymous when posting comments.... I would urge you to read your disparaging remarks aloud to yourself and think.... it may come to you.

Assuming that the person requesting the validation is indeed the same person that opted to remain "Hidden during voting", your comments are such that they certainly will not inspire others to openly make comments to you or anyone else for that matter.

You openly deride this person by calling him or her and idiot, and not having the mentall acuity of knowing that you are not a retard. I would suggest you wait till the challenge is over... I am certain they would love to communicate with you.

The Request for validation is a method available to all DPC members and unless you have done something wrong, there is nothing to fear from it.

Just a thought

Ray :O)

Technically, if you did any post-processing, it would be considered adulterated crap.

btw, your philosophy on your entry agrees with mine on all my entries. If people give you low scores - it's probably because they think it's crap. :)

The scoring on this challenge has been a roller coaster for me as well. Started out at 6.2222, dropped down to around 5.5 and now it is at 5.9. I am hoping to get out with a 6 if I am lucky, but every time I get close someone gives me a 2 or 3.

Thanks to all who have taken the time to comment in this competition!
