I love how this presented itself on my screen. Just as I was saying, "oh great, another feather picture", the little guy showed up! His head could be a little sharper, but you still get an 8 for his sweet little shadow toes and the surprise factor.
I've already voted, just commenting now.

Bonus points for the setup. The photographer's work has lifted this above the other stacked stone pictures.

Love the lighting and the door. The colors area atractive. 9
The texture on the floor looks like it's a carpet which doesn't go to well with the style of the door, but perhaps it's pebbles. That's the only thing I don't like about this.

The lighting should fit the purpose of the picture. So there are many ways you can decide to light a picture. None of them are either right or wrong. A good book to get, that will show many different set ups, is "Photographing People: portraits, fashion, glamour".
Something you might try, to get a feel for how your lights work, is use just one light for a while. Try placing it at different angles and heights and see how the shadows form. If you have a softbox, try the same lighting positions with and without it. Then introduce a reflector. How does that improve the picture. Generally, your second light should be used to help fill some of the shadows, but not eliminate them.
Hope this helps. I'm positive you will do a great job. I like this picture.

Holding Strong in Gentile Waters

First impression. Serene, perfect dof and good composition even though I'd like the tree more in the lower right quadrant.
Thoughts: Then I looked at the title and, forgive me, busted out laughing. I don't use spelling when deciding a score. Are gentile waters different from heathen waters or buddist waters? The name of the challenge as opposed to the word in the title just creates such a vivid picture in my mind!

I like the pp somewhat. The blue and white make a good statement about enlightment. Most times I like the original photo more than a negative. gl
After looking a both, I like this one better.

good portrait. I don't get a feeling like what is mentioned in the title. Looks like he is intensly concentrating on something that is out of view.

Balance

I like that the one ankle is wrapped. It shows how balance can lift a person above the pain. The blue mat makes it look like he is on a tightrope but when I look at his foot, it's not on one of the lines. Sort of disorienting, good thing the white line is there to ground everything.
