| 12/12/2002 08:12:12 AM | Dixie in Decemberby rll07Comment: The lighting and focus on this photo are superb, I feel like I could count every hair, but I don't get any idea at all of the personality of this dog! The portrait is very stiff and formal, and a bit undoglike really. Centering her head in a landscape photo adds to this feeling. I like centred compositions if the subject benefits from formality, symmetry, etc. but unless the dog has a reason to appear regal or heroic, it doesn't quite work for me. |
| 12/12/2002 08:06:45 AM | Enduranceby KarenBComment: I really like the shallow depth of field here. It reduces the twigs to graceful lines in a pleasant, soft background and throws all the focus on the overlapping leaves. I like the way the light filters through the leaves, showing the vein structure. You show a great eye for detail. The photo really evokes the feeling of changing seasons, winter setting in, etc. (a very northern hemisphere thing that I feel a bit removed from, since it was around 38C here today!). | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 12/12/2002 08:03:18 AM | First Snowby BAMartinComment: This is a very engaging photo. The way you used the diagonal element of the fence in the overall composition is very effective. It juxtaposes against the slanted angle of the motion-blurred snowflakes really well. It helps me to feel the pressure of the wind against the man and girl's faces. By positioning them far to the left, it draws my eyes to those details, and increases the pressure I perceive from the wind. Very astute compositional decisions :). | Photographer found comment helpful. |

| 12/11/2002 10:12:11 PM | Fleur Azureby BigSmilesComment: I'm just going to weigh in, after the discussion about this photo in the Rant forum, and say that I love the background on this. I don't generally like conventional flower shots, and what you have taken is an unconventional one. The background teams with the flower to create a colourful, dynamic effect.
Unfortunately, people see a photo with a flower in it and apply their usual standards for "flower shots" without trying to see how a photo can transcend a category and be an artwork. In that case, the background is seen as just a distraction and not a beautiful element in its own right. This is the difference between your professors and the people here. I'm not saying the audience here are wrong, just that they have different expectations of photography :). It's nothing to get upset about. |

This one really grabs me, and your attempt at a metaphorical interpretation of the challenge, while not scoring well, is very interesting. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 10/28/2002 11:42:00 PM | Lady in Red by SeekerComment: This is a very cool idea, and well executed, but it leaves me cold. It's a very clinical, impersonal use of a woman's body. Something disturbs me about images of just a torso, as you often see in advertising, with nothing else... no context, no personality, etc. It reminds me of "The Rape" by Rene Magritte (//www.finesite.webart.ru/shocking/rape.jpg), which uses that kind of disembodiment of the female torso to completely objectify it. This is just my feeling though. Well done on 2nd place :) |

| 10/28/2002 08:47:00 AM | monsterby GinaRothfelsComment: Gorgeous... the way the lighting picks out the creases on the sculpture's face is amazing. It seems full of wisdom and life. I love the black and white, and your framing. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 10/28/2002 08:00:00 AM | Poi--fire twirlingby OakleyComment: I absolutely love this photo. The woman has a beautiful, mature figure that adds a sense of naturalness and earthiness to the entire composition. It has such archetypal themes - the fertile female body and destructive yet life-giving fire. I love the soft focus, the colour, the curves of her body and the composition. |
