Critique Club #15
Composition: This is a fine shot of a great looking dog. Hard not to like him. The dog is centered and 'in your face'. In this case I think it works very well. Usually the lone subject centered is not as appealing. The expression, eyes ...=LOVE. I think the top could of been cropped just a bit, too much dead space.
Background: White. I think it works very well here. The frame matches the collar and draws the eye to the dogs neck.
Camera Work/Technical:Very nice. I would only suggest that the cameara been a bit lower-maybe eye level. The shot is sharp, crisp, in focus and has good lighting.
My Opinion: A very good shot. It's a perfect animal, showing love.

What a sweet portrait! Dixie looks very loved, and lovable!

The dog's expression says " I just don't have time for this", and he puts up with you anyway. This shot needs no more, except the all white background is kind of overpowering for me.

Gorgeous dog portrait.
12/14/2002 09:29:43 AM
Great focus, coloring and lighting. I love the expression in her eyes, and the way you captured the sparkle. I would crop it just a little tighter on the sides and top.
12/14/2002 01:16:47 AM
This is great. Lots of emotion in this one.
12/13/2002 01:09:59 PM
Oh, is she BEAUTIFUL!
12/13/2002 06:42:34 AM
Beautiful pet portrait, you didn't need the border. :) Really like the choice of backround too.
12/12/2002 10:54:41 PM
Lovely portrait. I was expecting a Xmas bauble around his neck or something like that, cause of the title.
12/12/2002 06:18:12 PM
what a beautiful doggie!! nice focus and nice white background. the blue border adds to the subject in this photo..good job.

Very nice dog portrait. Very nice and detailed. Great color. 8 Swash

The lighting and focus on this photo are superb, I feel like I could count every hair, but I don't get any idea at all of the personality of this dog! The portrait is very stiff and formal, and a bit undoglike really. Centering her head in a landscape photo adds to this feeling. I like centred compositions if the subject benefits from formality, symmetry, etc. but unless the dog has a reason to appear regal or heroic, it doesn't quite work for me.

This is a very well-done portrait of a beautiful dog.

I wish my dog would sit still for a second. This shot is composed very well. I like the white background with the blue collar and border.
12/11/2002 02:42:57 PM
That is just so cute. The only thing that would make it better would be if that was a blue bow around the next instead of the collar. Great detail and use of the border to really accent this shot. = 8

Almost a perfect photo of a lovely dog. But I´m not so sure about the border colour. It takes away my eyes from the dog. A smaller border in a brown colour would probably do it.

This really seems like an old navy ad to me... or maybe a christmas card! It's probably because of the border. You probably don't want to hear this, but without the blue border, I'd think this shot was incredible... and I'd probably give it a 9 or a 10. Without the border, it's a really artistically original idea. I love that the dog is just sitting there, head-on, like he's having his portrait done. Ooh... another analogy. Without the border, this looks like a mac 'switch' ad. I've lost my mind, and it appears your comment section is taking the hit for that -- sorry! :D

This dog has the best expression EVER. :-) The clarity and focus are wonderful and she really does look like she has something important to tell you. 10!
12/11/2002 10:59:56 AM
Nice shot, though the border is a bit distracting.
12/11/2002 09:50:25 AM
Great focus and lighting, but its overpowered by the very bold border, negating the negative space affect of the spaces to the left and right of the dog.
12/11/2002 08:32:42 AM
That doggie looks as if he'd just been told they stopped making MilkBones. Great portrait, great lighting and background.
12/11/2002 08:24:18 AM
Dixie is gorgeous, and full of character.
12/11/2002 07:51:48 AM
What a cute dog! I very much like the negative space you have left around the dog. Blue was a nice color for the frame as well. This could be used for your Christmas card this year :-)
12/11/2002 05:11:13 AM
Great profile for the dog. He posed perfectly for this shot. Great detail on him.
12/10/2002 11:23:38 PM
This is one of the best pet portraits I have ever seen! Can't get a good one of my boxer because she is a little wall-eyed, a boxer curse, and straight on shots look funny. This will go in my favorites. Beautiful Dixie!

There are multiple things about this photo, that don't make it as pleasing as it could be. I am saying these things, as advice for next time, and I hope that they are helpful. Please keep in mind, these are just what I think.
1) There is too much blank space especially above the dogs head, but also on the sides. This would have been more effective as a verticle instead of a horizontal.
2) The border is much too bright, I think it takes away from the subject and is distracting to the eye.
3) The white background is good because it is plain, but it is a little too bright for the subject, I think a more effective background might have been black? Just a thought though
4) Since the dog tags are in, I would have not cropped out just quite so much, so you could have the whole dog tags in

Plusses
1) Excellent focus, with a cute subject, and great detail!
2) Good lighting, I didn't know dogs had that big of whiskers! I thought that was a cat thing.

Good luck!

I must say, this is the first dog shot I've seen on DPC that I've given more than a 5. This is an excellent shot. Only thing missing is a red color and a Santa hat. Well done.
12/10/2002 08:49:25 PM
One of the better pet photos I've seen on here. Something about it makes me come back again and again. A very well done "portrait"!
12/10/2002 03:51:27 PM
I'm normally not a big fan of "pet photos," but this is certainly a wonderful exception. I love the composition, the clarity is spectacular, and the dog even looks as though it is thinking some sort of deep doggy thoughts! Very well done.
12/09/2002 11:27:01 PM
oh no! not a dog. lol Just kidding. He is very cute and you did a good job. I love the background and the focus is perfect. I do wish you could have got the whole dog in the photo, but that was probably was tough just to get this. Kids and aminals are hard to shoot. I love the blue frame. Put a bow on his head and send it as a christmas card.
12/09/2002 09:54:27 PM
love the eyes and expression. nice choice of border to match the collar.
12/09/2002 09:38:31 PM
The blue border brings out the blue collar great. The background is really solid white, well done.
12/09/2002 09:28:28 PM
I like the way the border matches Dixie's collar but she doesn't look too happy for the season! Nice focus and clarity.
12/09/2002 09:06:49 PM
Wow! Awesome sharpness. I'd like to see the whole dog, but still an excellent shot. Jacko 9 Let me guess. you have a Canon D-60?
12/09/2002 09:01:32 PM
This is my favorite.......don't really like the size of the border, but I guess you sized it to match the coller. Would have perfered portrate with an oval or free-form border if those types of borders are allowed. Actually, with no border, your background almost perfectly matches the dpc page.
12/09/2002 08:29:43 PM
I know people think pets are overdone, but you can't complain if the photo is done well, and this shot has a lot going for it...A distraction free background coupled with a great expression! Focus seems a little blurry at the tip of the nose, perhaps everywhere, could be an effect of post-editing? Still great shot! Nice gleam in the eye too. Can't vote but it would have been an 8.
12/09/2002 08:05:49 PM
beautiful dog portrait...I think I would prefer it off center or vertical. Border needs to be a little thinner.
12/09/2002 05:40:19 PM
Wonderful portrait of a cute dog. Good work. Might of cropped this tighter there is a lot of dead space. Also I'd of like to have been a little closer to this sweet dog. Golden? Wonderful face, loyal friend.
12/09/2002 01:48:59 PM
Cute doggie. Nice pet portrait, the lighting works well. I think that the crop could be a little more interesting...as it is now, the dog seems too isolated. I think maybe a tighter crop would have it feel a little more intimate.
12/09/2002 11:20:38 AM
Wadda beauty! The blue border doesn\'t really add any virtue to the image. It would be better without it, since the pooch more than satisfies the eye. This portrait of Dixie is excellent. Great expression, well captured, good lighting, texture, composition.
12/09/2002 09:37:16 AM
What a sweet puppy! Great portrait...nice job with the evenly lit backdrop. The border is a bit much for my tastes. 9
12/09/2002 08:34:15 AM
This in a wonderful pet photo. Nicely done ! Shiiizzzam
12/09/2002 05:51:21 AM
I have a Golden as well, but he would never sit still for a shot, unless he is asleep. This is a very good shot of a dog that is hard to shoot with the eyes just perfect. 8
12/09/2002 02:05:05 AM
Beautiful fellow. I impressed on how you got him to sit still for you. Nice shot.
12/09/2002 01:44:50 AM
Nice portrait , but I find the border to be a bit too much. Maybe if it weren't so wide. It does draw out the blue in his collar, though. Smellyfish1002
12/09/2002 01:07:03 AM
Wonderful, what can I say? Focus and clarity are awesome. background is nice, not distracting at all. The pose is great. border goes very well with the photo. angle and framing/cropping are perfect in my opinion. If this were my dog, I would have paid to have this taken. Great great job!! Good luck in the challenge.
