Gigglesby StarbananaComment by hajeka: Is was going to comment that I preferred one of your other photos of this model, but then I realized you have another username. So now I'm wondering what the connection is between you and bobonacus :) Btw. I like the relaxed look but somehow the face doesn't look in focus. |

low keyby StarbananaComment by Starbanana: Originally posted by aliqui: This is very grey. Have you tried playing with the levels adjustment to achieve richer tones? I took it into Photoshop and did some sampling, and there's no true black. Is the dark grey your intent, or do you need to adjust your monitor?
Also to the floating head syndrome mentioned below, was she wearing an actual black shirt? I wonder if a different color would allow you to isolate it in the B/W conversion and let you keep more of the detail and depth. I have no experience with that, I'm just thinking out loud... |
Monitor might need an adjustment but grey was what i ended up with after I edited it. Was black beforehand, and I mean very black! I desaturated it after lightening it & shifting the contrast as is looked better than the skin tone. Probably a case in point to the thread about people cheating by desaturating!! Was a 1st attempt and it went a tad wrong so I thought I would share so people can help out a bit. Thanks for your comment, 'tis appreciated.
And yes, she was wearing a black poloneck |

Short Cornerby StarbananaComment by jomari: I think the soft blurriness helps tell the story that you have told in words, (well, not the bit about your husband getting old and having dodgy knees). I like the energy that comes across. |

low keyby StarbananaComment by bobonacus: Yeah, more practice ;) I like the head tilt and the light on her hair is good .... floating head syndrome though ... need some light on her top I think just to lift it from the background ... but then I could be talking utter rubbish!! |

Short Cornerby StarbananaComment by hajeka: Looking at the circumstances, it's a nice photo. I know how difficult it can be, after years and years trying to get decent hockey photos. Colors looks ok! I think you should have used a wider aperture to get the speed up. Still not sure what a good position is when they are running out of the goal. |

Short Cornerby StarbananaComment by bobonacus: Depends what you were going for .... I assume you chose f/11 and 1/30 to get some motion blur? Personally I'd have shot a little faster to just get just a little leg motion blur so their faces were not blurred, you could have gone f/5.6 @ 1/120 and you'd have had a little blur. You could also bracket in Av mode by say 1 stop, you would end up with an under and over exposed shot but it's a quick way to see what shutter speed you prefer. But I prefer sharp with a little motion blur, you might prefer more blur!
I'd have liked to see a more front on view to see their faces more and maybe the ball / other team, but then the motion blur would be just be blurry!! or maybe a shot from more behind them so you can see the ball / other team
It is nice and colourful, I really like that .. hides the rubbish weather well! |
