Or possibly penalty corner, they change thier minds!!

The goalie is my husband who wont be playing much longer due to getting old and having dodgy knees (from all the years playing various flavours of hockey) so I popped along to take some shots of this game.

It was gloomy, 3ish in the afternoon, the sun was heading to the horizon (not that you had seen it all day) they were playing under floods & it was drizzling - my camera was mostly covered with a carrier bag, such a good look!! Most of my shots werent really any good. I have tried to rescue this one a little but its still not as clear as I would want it.

Part of me hopes MattO wont look at this as he is such a good sports photographer, & part of me hopes he does for the same reason!! If you do, advice & CC welcomed, im a big girl, I can take it.

Meant to say that I was playing with setting on this day so the first thing I would do differently is have the aperture at about 5.6ish as 11 was too slow & the rest of the shoot was mostly at 5.6. but they arent particularly interesting shots.

I actually like this as an artistic type shot, the slow shutter speed and blur on the players with your husband still being sharp is nice. However on a typical sports shot I try to get the fastest shutter speed I need to stop action, or nearly stop action depending on the sport I'm shooting........F11 works on this shot, but probably not on many from that day.

I think the soft blurriness helps tell the story that you have told in words, (well, not the bit about your husband getting old and having dodgy knees). I like the energy that comes across.

Looking at the circumstances, it's a nice photo. I know how difficult it can be, after years and years trying to get decent hockey photos. Colors looks ok! I think you should have used a wider aperture to get the speed up. Still not sure what a good position is when they are running out of the goal.

Depends what you were going for .... I assume you chose f/11 and 1/30 to get some motion blur? Personally I'd have shot a little faster to just get just a little leg motion blur so their faces were not blurred, you could have gone f/5.6 @ 1/120 and you'd have had a little blur. You could also bracket in Av mode by say 1 stop, you would end up with an under and over exposed shot but it's a quick way to see what shutter speed you prefer. But I prefer sharp with a little motion blur, you might prefer more blur!

I'd have liked to see a more front on view to see their faces more and maybe the ball / other team, but then the motion blur would be just be blurry!! or maybe a shot from more behind them so you can see the ball / other team

It is nice and colourful, I really like that .. hides the rubbish weather well!
