Butterfly Delightby ShutterPugComment: Since you asked in a forum thread...... I didn't vote, but here are my guesses to explain the lower votes (I don't necessarily agree with everyone, I'm just guessing people's reasons):
1) Butterfly shots are very common
2) Some butterflies are much more colorful than this one
3) The OOF issues
4) Whilst the background is slightly blurred, the whole photo is still very busy and the subject doesn't stand out from it all.

You're Nextby TCGuruComment: Too funny! It all works together so well - the look, the pose, the muted colors, the post processing, the title ...... great shot! |

Valley of Fireby BlackboxComment: We've just visited New Mexico. In some of my photos, the sky is a ridiculous blue (that's how it really looked), and a couple of other colors appeared "overcooked", too.
In those cases, I do lower the saturation a tiny bit, even if that is less "real", but it makes a better photo (IMHO). |

The world as we view it today.by aKiwiComment: I love the idea and the illusion, but it would have worked so much better if you had washed that window (pane of glass) before the shot. |

Daybreak by robaComment: Wtg Rob, that is just lovely! Congrats on the ribbon.
Do tell - exactly where IS this spot?
My favorite fog spot driving down the hill towards Maple Valley Highway is too full of power lines etc. My eyes and brain can ignore all the distractions, but I know that a photo wouldn't :-( |

DSC_0319.JPGby mbrutus2009Comment: Since you asked for a critique, here it is:
I wouldn't call this a portrait, more of a candid snapshot. Having sunglasses perched on top of your head is not a deliberate "portrait" thing to do.
Another non-portrait indicator are the distractions in the background, especially the thing growing out of her head - that is very much a No-NO!
I love her smile! Pretty girl, sweet smile, nice angle.
I wish the focus on the eyes was sharper. It seems that when it comes to people, as long as the eyes are in perfect focus, the rest can look good, no matter what.
In this case, the focus point was on her hair (lower left).
I'm no expert on b&W conversions, but this one looks "blah" even to me! It needs more range, more contrast, more something.
There are gazillions of tutorials available on the internet, have a cruise around, I'm sure you'll find lots of great tips on how to take good portraits.
