Waited for a full year to get this shot.

I wanted to get this last year in the fall, when the fog rolls in and fills the valley. Took me too long to find the right vantage point, so I literally had to wait a year for it to come around again. Was hoping to get Mt. Rainier in the frame, but it's too far to the right to get detail in the sun (had to go to a 17-40 or 10-22 to get it, and then it lost all of the fog (so was pointless).

I love the fog, and was happy to get out early enough to find it on the right day :O)

This is a manual HDR using 5 exposures.

Post Challenge:

Well... i can die happy now :O)

It's been one of my goals all year to ribbon in a Free Study. Thanks for all of the votes & comments!!!

Surprised that brownsm was the only one to question the crop. Thought I'd get punished for that. I originally had it cropped much lower on top, but as he pointed
out... it just didn't look as good. I hated to enter something with the horizon at 50%, but figured I'd take the chance.

This loses so much at this size. I can't wait to print this large-scale. Mt. Rainier is a huge silhouette just off to the right, as I shot the pano for this and bracketed for HDR on the entire thing.

Guess it was worth waiting a year to get this shot! :O)

I gave this a 6. That's a high score for a landscape from me. That's because landscapes rarely hold interest for me. They usually fit so neatly into their genre, and by definition there's no human element to add to it. The reason I gave this a 6 is because it looks upside-down. The clouds are bearing down on the sun, and the fog is so thick it looks like clouds. The trees don't quite fit what the mind is expecting, creating a surprising friction in the brain. The world is neatly divided between land and sky, as in so many landscapes, but this just adds to the disorientation.

This is a photograph I faved earlier. As I mentioned earlier, the scene looks like two different scenes spliced into one. The top and lower halves if separated could act as complete landscapes in their own right with the fog being the key to completing both images. The scene taken as a whole is quite interesting in its own right. It's not your typical sunrise photo, which often relies heavily on a wider range of colors for it's appeal. This photo doesn't have that nor does it need it.

I like the way the fog divides the capture into two separate images which blend beautifully into one. Very nicely done and a well deserved third place win.

Wtg Rob, that is just lovely! Congrats on the ribbon.

Do tell - exactly where IS this spot?

My favorite fog spot driving down the hill towards Maple Valley Highway is too full of power lines etc. My eyes and brain can ignore all the distractions, but I know that a photo wouldn't :-(

at first I was going to suggest cropping off a bit of the sky, but when I looked at it closer, that wouldn't work as well as the crop you have here. the sky adds a little more weight to the top of the frame to balance the bottom where all the action is! great image!
