Victoria Herbal Doctor by whiteroomComment: Originally posted by Cutter: The thing that concerns me with this picture is the fact there is absolutely nothing that would assist me in understanding she is an "herbal doctor". So as an environmental portrait, I believe this is a failure...In light of challenge description of framework of the subject's environs, all I gather is she likes to stand in front of sacks...Any one else see this? |
No...I don't see this at all. In fact I'm quite certain it doesn't matter whether or not YOU get it at all. The *point* of the environmental portrait genre is that it's a portrait, shot in the subjects' natural environment. It clearly says that the portrait should say something about the SUBJECT in the framework of their environment, not necessarily about the environment itself.
It's these types of (mis)interpretations that frustrate the hell out of me when it comes to DP.
I see a very good technical portrait, set in her natural environment. it speaks to me about her, and in that - it is a success. standing in front of sacks may well be the point.

~Me~by HBunchComment: K i'm finally back for the real comment. what i was going to say was that I thought your editing has improved over the years. I recognized you right away, but you have made an interesting metamorphosis since back in the early days when your only comment about your SPs was that they made your nose look big. :)
one of the things i'm beginning to dig about portrait photography that seems to have taken me forever to figure out, is that you get the chance to become someone you're not - you can tell a story via the image, and there's no need to back it up or validate it. (if I'd been paying attention earlier I could have learned this looking at the works of people like Alecia, Kiwi, and Nasti...but i'm not all that perceptive it seems). So even though the setup of this is very similar to the last SP challenge with your high-key (then) new red hair, the two shots have very distinct looks, and that my dear is cool.
so good on ya. keep working on the processing...it'll come over time.
