I think this is the wrong side of the mirror, but it works anyway. Well it mostly works, except it made the dog sideways. Well, dog star, actually, but it fell out of the sky because it's daytime and because the mirror is backwards.

Some things just can't be done with Instagram. We still need photographers. Thank you.

There is of course a barrier between the viewer and whatever it is that the viewer sees in the photo.

You could call that barrier a door.

You could call that barrier two doors. She threatens to close the first door. The second door... why, that's near enough for us to grab it, to prevent her from closing it, or to close it ourselves, or to pull it open further.

It took me some effort to write this out, but I am merely describing the very first thing I felt when I saw the image... the physics of two doors belonging to the same body. and every part of this image contributes to that effect. I know you're not Michelangelo laboring over every square inch of your canvas, you're just a lucky so-and-so who knows which photos are lucky... but really you and Michelangelo are the same, the gods of imagery are smiling upon you.

just the right amount of blur and noise and cropping to achieve ... unity between reality and dream. This is not done, as some think, merely by making a mess. It actually requires a careful balance. Showing too much shadow and reflection ruins the effect. It's like lucid dreaming... you know you're in the dream, so you're not worried. This photo keeps you in the dream and doesn't let you know it's a dream.

this photo is almost too successful. It almost solves itself. The people in the background are perfect foils for the beautiful protagonist, who seems about to confront them. I almost forget that I have no idea what is actually going on. This could easily be a still from a movie (in square format). Yes, that's it. It's like a grainy Cindy Sherman photo, but I don't think it's set up. But it could be.

I admire this because it's hard to pull off. the layers of the signs, and being cut across by wires, the unpropitious elements all work together to create something new.

I know that girl. By drawing on a window, she combines her artwork with the world outside (or the world inside depending on where you're standing). By photographing her, you capture the process of these worlds combining, and you capture the artist, and the strong shadows on her face are similar to the dark shapes in her artwork, so you suggest that the whole thing is one artwork.

Or I could just go with Feminist Theory and say this is another old white guy stealing a woman's art.... ;)

The foreground waitress is beautiful, and painted by a Sumi-e brush. The diners are absorbed into the wall mural. These are subtle but very strange effects, making this photo not like other photos. It's not a photo *of* something interesting or important. It's a record of an unusual point of view, a hint at seeing the world in a different way.
