It looks like it's a stacking of like four parts of the earth and sky. Like bricks making the shot. I like it.
I normally fancy a bit of dramatic contrast in the clouds, and would have probably ruined the feel of the shot if I was editing.

I like this one more. I also agree with your thoughts on the editing. What you have here is definitely more fitting than minimal!
I submitted one for the 'over' challenge, but in the authors notes I put in a "how it should have been" link.

I'm trying to figure out if it'd've looked better with the butterfly in focus and can't figure it out. It certainly adds depth this way. I like it. And I don't like cats one bit!

Wow... I was sure that'd do far far better than it did. I was one of your four 9's.
Nice soft lighting. Great composure. Nice DOF. Good use of negative space.
I was looking for this when I was going through the top few pages of the competition entries and was surprised to not see it. The only thing I'd change with it is on the top over her right shoulder there's a bit of something black popping down. In advanced editing (I believe) you could have cloned that out as it wasn't a major constituent of the shot. Otherwise you might have been able to crop it out. Or make a boarder disguise it or something.
Again, excellent work.
