Challenge: Free Study 2010-07 (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-7D
Lens: Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0L USM
Location: Sherkstons Shores
Date: Jul 19, 2010
Aperture: f/4
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/4000
Galleries: Panoramic, High Dynamic Range (HDR)
Date Uploaded: Jul 11, 2010

Submitting this under protest. I was much more happy with the 1st image I chose from July, but unfortunately this image is waaaaaaaaaaaay more DPC-friendly. If I already had a dozen ribbons or HMs, I'd probably be more cavalier and daring with my entries.

3-shot bracket at f4, processed the RAWs in Photomatix and the 16-bit TIFF in Photoshop. Unsharp Mask and Topaz, resize and border.

This is a shot from the beach at Sherkston Shores, where some friends of ours have a place. It is, in my opinion, the best beach on the Great Lakes (saying that without having visited them all, of course, so caveat emptor :-P ). Hopefully, the kids' memories of Summer Vacations will contain pieces of scenes like this...

It's not all about the votes though. I'm mostly happy if I get one positive comment from a shot.
Yo_Spiff seems to sometimes talk about submitting shots that appeal to a certain sub-culture of DPC, and I think he's happy when they respond to the shot. I'm not sure if I'd feel comfortable doing that yet though.

Oh, for sure. In the case of this image, it has a broader appeal...dramatic sky, reflections, HDR toning. In the case of the shot I wanted to submit, it might have struck a chord with someone who's actually seen Avatar (not the crappy movie, but the three seasons of animation heaven). I dunno, I guess I really want another ribbon, then I can be like "pfffft, I'm a multiple ribbon winner, if you don't get my awesome photography skillz, it's because YOU suck". :D

Waterbender.

...but it would have had some high votes, and then hundreds of "what a crappy snapshot" votes.

Possibly over-topaz'd but I'll be darned if it doesn't work well for this. Wonderful tableu (or however that's spelled.)

I think this would be better if the HDR processing looked a little more natural.
