Self Study #36by photogirl66Comment: Ah, it's bold and has 'zing'! I have a feeling, it may also have 'worked' in colour? Very refreshing change from the voting routine. Thanks. |

meby heidaComment: The inclusion of ambience here is very refreshing in this context. The photo appeals to me in a very direct and untechnical way. The shadow creates a symmetry, which, IMO, nicely compensates for the subject looking outside of the picture. |

Self Portrait #4by jillzComment: Unassuming, reasonable straigthforward approach, b & w the appropiate choice for this 'true' capture. The composition (emphasizing face and hand) is both simple and sensitive.
My compliments. > 6 |

braceletby imagesloyolaComment: Not a bad capture. I appreciate the side light accentuating the muscles and veins, which was likely the intention... The 'languishing' facial expression, however, tells a story with, perhaps, less universal appeal?

Spare Parts?by kavamamaComment: This piece so much more than a photograph. The seemingly incidental composition makes child's play of the inherent complexity. Assymetries appearing in both, the puzzle pieces (i.e. the unusual triangular shapes) and in the background, add a welcome dynamic and coherence. Background hue and the considerable range of tonality here are sublte, yet aesthetically exciting. There is a wonderful balance between the various elements of this picture, which so often indicates an integrated and apt approach on part of the author. Not a baroque or self-conscious approach to the subject!
I consistenly reserve 10's for pieces I'd like to see alongside the 'classic greats'. This is one of them. It does, in my book, add interest to the word. > 10

The Horseby birgirComment: This is such an unassuming capture, much too small for any informed criticism or even to hold the attention of the average voter long enough to merit it.
The truth is, I 'like' this photo. The angular relative position of the horses against the rising hill in the background lends some composition to this pastoral idyll. The (camera) lens distorts the size of the (front) horse's head, which adds an element of humour. The light and colour tones appear very natural, apparently without anything having come between lens and the subject.

Menacing elegance by jjbeguinComment: Obviously a very good macro and photo, which leaves little room for criticism :-).
The carefully chosen title, IMO, introduces a personal viewpoint without being explanatory in any way. Well done! |

Finish Line by RuchartComment: Exciting shot! Marvellous emptiness!
Composition, perspective, colour and light (the fading tonality toward the distance) are so smoothly integrated. The first and overall impression, to me, is one of an 'easy, casual' shot premissing a fair degree of skill and a very good eye. |

Paperclipsby sagestudioComment: Sometimes (!) I run into a photo with apparent flaws (contrast, lighting, focus...), when compared to the familar and usually sensible ways of photography.
Here, IMO, we have a photograph that relies very little on any extraneous codec. Everything is as it should be. It is, in short, a photo to be studied and learnt from.
The tension (dynamics) created between the 'frivolous' clips, the dignified (sorrowful?) face (a 'telling' mouth) and the hard and dry manner is what makes this an outstanding photo. The sculptural (bust-) effect achieved by blending the dress into the background and the very deliberate composition (the partial face) are extreme and cannot be done better.
I bow.

Liquid Tomato...aka..Tomato Soupby Girl from OZComment: For a bowl of, say, tomato-banana soup, presented like this on the menu, if service and ambience could match the immaculate attention and care of the photographer... I'd be obliged to pay dearly and tip genourously.
Given the 'emotive' limits set by the challenge, I vote in the same spirit. |
