Wow that black background really makes the caterpillar and the fauna really pop off the page. The colors are bold and vibrant. It really captures the attention of the eye immediately. We get a wonderful opportunity to explore the colors and the details not only on the caterpillar but also on the plant. Very well done!

How did I miss this one? Maybe before I joined. What a spectacular shot. The variying heights and textures are great. Super focus, contrast and coloration. Well deserved for a ribbon.

Here's a link to a picture of what it will be by now:

Great picture - perfect composition, focus & exposure. Most bug photographers take pretty flat pictures. This has life, and makes folk see there's more to moths than just the dull brown dead things you have to clean off the window ledge!

Congrats on the win JJ! I looked for some info on that critter, but couldn't find anything specific. I'm sure he is some kind of hornworm, but I don't know if we have any that look like that around here. So I have no idea what kind of moth or butterfly he is in training for!

Congratulations from an inhabitant from the same lake coast in Switzerland who's beginning in digital photography and hopes to be able (...one day)to take such great pictures as you do... P.S. : I can't stop admirating the picture "A critical eye on his liquids" which is absolutely stunning for me. It deserved a better place

Those critters just look so wild! Good clean composition... very nice.
06/22/2003 01:05:24 PM
This is a well done photograph. It meets the challenge as the subject is a tad off center which greatly enhances the composition. The colors are vivid, the focus and DOF are very good for a macro. The background is very black without noticible flaws. This is difficult to attain but is a must due to the deep DOF necessary to make this photograph work. Conratulations on a job wonderful image. - 10 - RLS

nice caterpillar...though I don't prefer the use of black as the background. Would have loved to see this against blurred green grass. Something about having a 2nd bloom there also takes away from the main focus.

I like how you have added a second flower at a lower height. I think most people would have just done the stalk with the caterpillar.

I think the title is the weakest part of this photo. Colors and focus are perfect. The black background seems a little cold or vacant, this picture might have done better with a more 'natural' background (grass, other flowers and such) even if faked.

The carefully chosen title, IMO, introduces a personal viewpoint without being explanatory in any way. Well done!

This has to be a Top 10, perhaps Top 3 shot! The colors are just awesome here. The subjects are great -- this is one of those rare instances where I could easily see this hanging on the wall. Great job! - 10
