Thanks goes to bear_music Vawendy Bohemka Nikonjeb. They really helped me make up my mind.. I did end up fixed on another picture but I showed it and this one to a few of my non-photography friends and they gravitated towards this image immediately so I decided to go for this one. *please please, let this not be a sub 5. I've lost all objectivity because I've been staring at it too long and I don't have a clue where this will land*

Yes, this is how these people cross the river. I've seen this contraption on the sides of roads but never saw people use them this closely so I was pretty excited to get the opportunity. The girls were going back home after chopping firewood and my hotel is a few minutes walk from this place so my short walk paid off. The river is massively fast and scary and this was a DIY trolley thing that could easily fall. I was slightly worried about where I was standing. There's a rope on the other side that needs manpower to be pulled though I've seen battery powered ones too for when the river gets too wide and the bridge is too far away. I found out a bit later that the area lost their bridge in a flood last summer so this must have been very useful. A new one stands in the place of the old one now but whoa the water must have been insane.

Even with this opportunity I mucked this shot completely. Wrong choice of lens and perspective. I did fix that when my grandmother took the opportunity to jump in and asked these girls if she could go next. *nods* Yes, I have a very adventurous grandmother and family vacations aren't complete unless she does something like this. She ended up with the best pictures but she didn't look at me once. I think I screamed myself hoarse but the river is so loud that she couldn't hear me so I have great shots of the back of her head. lol!

And RAW just drove me insane!!! All my jpegs were perfectly exposed but all my raws took so much work. .. gah! I need raw101 so bad

Excellent! See, by cutting away the surroundings you now get a wonderfully sharp view of the look on her face, and there's suddenly a great story here. Depth of field is well done to reduce background distractions, the colors and detail are fantastic. This is a wonderful image.

I wish you had moved back and shown a little more surroundings - since I have seen these makeshift cable cars in use to cross rivers and valleys, I can appreciate the beauty even without seeing it in this picture, but for most people imo it might be a hard visualization! Good luck in the challenge!

Wow, this would have been a National Geographic photo if they were both looking at you. Awesome shot
