A lucky shot, taken while flying home from vacation. The entire country seemed to be covered with clouds, and then there was a small opening, and it was over this. Meteor Crater is almost a mile wide and 550 feet deep. That tiny black rectangle at the top of it is the visitor center.

@one2one: Yes, I have a couple more but not nearly as sharp or as dramatic. This was the best.

This looks like it was very purposeful. I liked seeing a pick for nat geo that wasn't about zoo animals. I was surprised to read that it was taken from an airplane window.

Congrats on your ribbon. This is one my favorite places that I have visited in the US. It's amazing to see the might and power that one of these meteors. I remember the long road in from the interstate and seeing it from above reminds just how far that was.

I consider it nothing short of a scandal that this is your first ribbon (DQ aside); I've been looking at your Flickr portfolio recently and found such stunning work that I was going to drop you a line anyway. How wonderful that I can do so by congratulating you on this ribbon. The first of many I'm sure.

Works on two levels, as a fascinating study of the topology, and as a thoroughly appealing abstract style image.

This is a fabulous image. Breathtaking. It oozes NG quality. They have always pushed the boundaries and taken photography to new levels, always seeking a new angle or vantage point. From the zig zag of the riverine forested river to the left, the hand of man roads, clouds for depth, and the lovely shadow and 3D accentuation of the crater. Top marks. I hope you aren't getting nailed by the "It's not a Lion, baby seal, African Tribe" crowd...Even if you got lucky on a flight from A-Z, it's bloody hard to shoot through a porthole without some form artefacts, aberration and distortion. This would be the only reason I see why SC made this challenge Advanced and not Basic Editing. To allow the photographer some leeway in PP to get his shot NG-Like.
